Several of the tying videos I’ve seen lately use Melanistic Pheasant Tail fibers, mostly in black. After a Google search I can’t find where to buy them in the US. Does anybody know of a source?

Unless there is something special in the quality of a Melanistic Pheasant Tail that you are looking for, I know that you can pick up pheasant tails dyed black, red and green from places like Hobby Lobby and other craft stores. In Hobby Lobby, they can be found in the plastic flower arrangement area. This may not be what you are looking for.

My dad used to raise melanisric pheasants. It’s been a while but I think you can assume that there is no real difference between their tails and ringneck tails especially when dyed. Melanistic pheasants are often preferred by growers for meat birds because they are not considered game birds by state regulators and thus not regulated as heavily.

I use dyed black from Nature’s Spirit or Hareline. I have not noticed any complaints from the Trout…

Me, too. Have to say the dyeing process seems to take some of the life out of the feathers, but the fish don’t seem to care
