May Swap of the Month

In deference to bob9 I’m starting the thread early. In deference to Gigmaster I’ve chosen another historic theme; classic winged bass flies. Dr. James Henshall wrote The Book of the Black Bass in 1881 and revised it several times into the 20th century. It is available as a free PDF download here Book of the black bass by James A. Henshall | Open Library and other places. See the image, below, for Dr. Henshall’s Four Favorite Flies (although there is apparently too many swords in the tail of the Henshall). If you have other sources for classic bass flies feel free to share.

Bill,

Put me down for “The Oriole.”
I will use the pattern in “The Global FlyFisher.”

Bob9

Bill,

Put me down for the Oriole.

Bob9

Green Mantle for me!

Bill
I will go for “The Montreal”

My wife has challenged me to step out of my comfort zone would the wyanoke be acceptable

Here is a link to an article in FlyTyer http://www.flytyer.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=51&Itemid=0 on Classic Bass Flies. Jwb, it took me a while to find the Wyanoke. Talk about outside comfort zones! It certainly qualifies as a classic bass pattern. Here’s a link to a nice photo. http://www.classicflytying.com/index.php?showtopic=33049&hl=wyanoke.

Of course, we can’t ignore Mary Orvis Maybury. She is one of the greatest of classic bass fly tiers / histroians(?). (However, her book is not free…)

well I will attempt it as long as i can find all the materials and have the ability. If not I may have to switch it up but put me down for it.

I like a good challenge hopefully i can deliver. The wife put the pressure on

I will do thde Butcher. Now to find wood duck feathers.

Rick

Jwb brought up an important point. Some of the materials used in the original patterns are no longer available or may be illegal. Feel free to substitute as necessary.

I think I am going to go with the Bemis.

Hey, I recognize those flies! wink Thank you again, by the way.

Karli-Rae

I will attempt to do tie up some Ondawa on size 10.

Difficult choice, don’t know what to do!

Is it a problem if i want to tie the same fly as another tier?? I found 2 that are probably in my tying ability but both are spoken for already. The Oriole or the Butcher. I am not very good at tying winged flies and these 2 look like I can do either of them. The Montreal and The winged gold ribbed hares ear look good also. got all these off the Global fly fishers web site. Classic wet flies and Classic bass and lake flies sub forums. thanx
Shad Clark.

I would like to tie this one, not sure what it’s called. The Gagnon, maybe? Found it here: Web Page Under Construction

Roadhog:
It is certainly ok with me if you tie the same pattern. It is always interesting to see the differences in style and technique.
Thanks

Ugly flies went in the mail today.

Rick

Darn… Too bad I didn’t see this until just now… I like tying the older flies and fishing them as well…
