What do I use to make marks on my line. I have thought just a plain old sharpe but then I thought would not line cleaner take it off. After all that thought I figured I would ask everyone here what is best and blame it on you guys when it did not work. ha ha ha
you could use some tying thread and whip finish some markers on the line
Sharpie works for me.
Why do you want to draw on your line with a magic marker??
I’ve just always used small “tics” from a Sharpie. Holds up well.
Ray, it’s a way of having a “memory point” right on the line to know what weight it is, and if it’s WF or DT.
It also gives you a distance point when you are stripping line off, and on my larger reels I mark my backing so I know how far off (or down) a fish is.
When I first started fly fishing, I marked a couple of my lines with a single Magic Marker line at ten foot intervals. Not only did this help me strip off the right amount of line prior to a cast, but it was also helpful in learning to judge distances. I also learned that I am not destined to cast over seventy or eighty feet-----ever! The mark faded with time but was still visible for the life of the fly line.
Hey JL, where are you hanging out now that Foothills has closed down? 8T
I’ve been known to mark my lines with the “Roman Numeral” method to designate the line weight at the tip …but also at the 30ft and 40ft distances.
Zip cast does tend to take off Sharpie and Magic Marker.
Nail knot with tippet and coat it with knot sense or pliobond. Or just re-mark it every so often with the sharpie.
When fishing spring creeks where the water is gin clear I like to color up the first 15 feet or so of my fly line with a black art marker from hobby lobby. costs around 5 bucks and will last for about a season of heavy use.
I also carry a black art marker with me on stream to tone down colors of my dry flies. And they work great to add eyes, body markings, etc. to foam body flies.

I have a lot of lines and some of them don’t get used often enough so that I remember what they all are, so I mark them (with a Sharpe) with fat (=) and thin (-) slash marks[ul]
