March 2010 Swap of the Month - Comparadun

I like to use these monthly swaps to learn more about different flies and how to tie them. It makes me a better tier as a result, I think. IBRB asked me to select the fly and host the March swap - as long as the flies weren’t nymphs.

Well, I’ve never made a comparadun before… but I know they’re very popular in our local streams. So, let’s see your comparaduns.

The usual rules apply. Flies are due to me by March 31.

  1. John R – sulpher comparadun
  2. sanctyphillia Received
  3. ibrb – Improved Sparkle Dun Received
    4.Texfly Received
  4. bdesavage - Olive Comparadun in sz 20 Received
  5. Cal E. Batis - Grey Sparkle Dun Dropped out of swap
  6. FISHNFOOL9 - Yellow Duns Received
  7. Gigmaster - Trailing Shuck (Sparkle) Comparadun Received
  8. Sjo - brown Comparadun Received
  9. tannaya – Dropped out of swap
  10. branhap – Hairwing Dun PMD
  11. RGP759 – March Brown Received

Thanks,
John

John I’ll do a Olive Comparadun in sz 20:)

I’ve never tied a comparadun before. How is this for a first attempt? I’ll do a Trico Comparadun (mainly because I have most of the materials).

I’ll try to make the body a bit thinner, and more tapered towards the front, and the til a abit more sparse. These tiny flies are tough to get proportioned exactly…

Hook: Cabelas # 01 sz. 18
Thread: Black 6/0 Unithread
Tail: Grizzle Hackle Barbs, split (sort of…)
Body: Black fine antron (I think…) dubbing.
Wings: Bleached Elk Hair (I don’t have any white deer body-hair…).

It floats really good.

Look’s Good to Me, I haven’t tied any since a swap a couple of years ago, I think I remember how.

It’s the March SOTM, so what better to tie than a March Brown?

Bob

I’d like to change my pattern to the Trailing Shuck (Sparkle) Comparadun. I don’t like the way the Elk hair looks on the Trico, and without fine deer-hair, it’s really just a messed up Elk-Hair Caddis., I think this one will look a lot better for everyone. I want everyone to get a usable fly from me.

Trailing Shuck (Sparkle) Comparadun

Hook: Cabelas Model 01 sz 16
Thread: 6/0 Unithread yellow
Tail: a few strands of chartruese Krystal Flash
Body: Orvis Angora Goat dubbing yellow
Wing: Summer Deer Body Hair natural

I’ll do a brown Comparadun!

Sjo

I will do a Improved Sparkle Dun. Pale morning Dun. Improved is the pattern not my tying.

I will do a Hairwing Dun PMD. Will update after I tie one, as to all the details.

Paul

Duplicate PLease delete.

I think I will try a Grey Sparkle Dun.

Cal E. Batis

John,

I have my flies tied up. Please PM me the shipping address.

Thanks,

Bob

John,
Flies are finally done, tied about 30 to get the 12 or so good enough for the swap.
I’ve included a couple of extra “fishing” quality for the “SwapMeister”.
I did find a way to salvage some of my rejects I turned them into Parachutes.
As long as I remember to take them along with me to work they will go in the Mail tomorrow.
Give Vicki a Hug for Us.

My flies are done, need an adress. What about a compensation for postage?
Sjo

Sjo – Address provided.
Bill – salvaging rejects is what I do all the time. You’d think I’d be getting better at this by now.
IBRB – got your flies over the weekend!

John

Flies are done but I’m wondering
how many to send in? The group
seems to be getting a little thin
since last month. Just need shipping
info.

Mine are out, over the Atlantic now!!

Texfly: Shipping info sent. With one possible exception I think we’re good for this month.

Bill: Your flies arrived yesterday. They look good! And one of these days maybe I’ll actually get to get out and fish 'em!

Sjo: Looking forward to them!

John

My Yellow Duns are in the mail as i type this.

I have tried twice to post something only to have it rejected???
I hate the new layout, i am only 46 years old so it cant be old age??? LOL
