Some time back I inquired about a book “fishing henry’s lake by bill schiess” Got a lot of info and bought the book. What a excellent book not just about henry’s lake but about still water fishing in general. Seeing as how that makes up the most of my fishing I found it very good. On page 58 was a very good statement or should I say section and I am going to put it here word for word.
Are we destroying our fly fishing sport? The sport of fishing is declining. Could it be that we are too secretive to help others learn and enjoy the sport? Many of us will not sharae our fly patterns with others, we will not show people how to cast, strip line, tie flies or let them in our boat.
We will share our secrets only with our buddies. When asked by a stranger about what we are using —we lie.
It doesn’t hurt to help others have a little success–someone once helped us> We don’t have to catch eveery fish in the lake ourselves. Help others learn and enjoy our sport.
Two reasons I bring this up
- While fishing one of the local rivers and not catching anything I inquired as to what they were hittin on and received the reply: “flies”
- In learning only from a friend how to fly fish and because he has a handicap can only go out so much I craved knowledge and in the process found this site where everyone helps everyone else and combined provides a wealth of information.
I guess that is my way of saying “Hey great site” and Thanks
