Mallard and Claret (variation) SBS

A few changes to Michael Jensen’s version; dabbler-like.

hook ? Dai Riki 075 #8
thread - Danville 6/0 wine
tail - pheasant neck
rib - small oval tinsel gold
body - dubbing claret
hackle - hen black
cloak/wing - bronze mallard

Part 1

mash barb, start thread; wrap to bend

prep pheasant neck feather; tie in by tip, wrap, tie off/trim

tie in rib

dub thread/dub body

rib body; tie off/trim

rough it up a bit

Part 2

tie in (folded) hackle by tip; wrap, tie off/trim

even tips on a section of bronze mallard; strip off quill

measure (tips past bend), lay against hook, capture with soft loop, allowing it to roll around body as you wrap; trim butts

you could tie it off at this point if you’re looking for a sparser look but I was in the mood for a defined wing

strip off another segment of bronze mallard; fold (3 times for one this size)

measure (tips to tail) the wing; wax thread, spin it tight (for a bit more bite), tie in with a lot of tension to keep it from rolling, which it is prone to do

Part 3

trim butts, whip finish, SHHAN

Scott
