IT works very well for its intended purpose.
Gadgets like the magic tool are fun to look at and see maybe a new idea or make something easier for people who need help. The magic tool is not a tool but a gadget that to me requires more time to set up and do things where I could have done them the old fashion way in half the time and a far less steps. To me I feel the tool is not worth the time or effort.

for the 35-40 bucks they are charging, those little plastic clips better come clipped to a case of beer or something. I still can’t justify buying those things and I buy alot of useless crap for tying (just ask my friends)
Those large, metal paper clips (clamps?) do almost the same thing and they’re about 90% less expensive.
What pray tell is the magic tool .
Andy B,
Have you used it??

Ducksterman:
I was given an oppurtunity this year to play with it and try before I buy at the Internation fly tying symposium this past Novemeber. I told them unless I could try it first money will not leave my wallet. So since I was tying with the GUild in that show they gave me a demo to go and try out. I played with this thing and did not like it. By the time I finally gotten the clip set up and went through the procedures, I could have done it better and faster the old fashion way. This is a gizmo that I feel is not worth the money and or time. Yes in fly tying there are some tricks and techniques that need to be learned and pacticed. I believe that fly tying is still keep it simple as possible. I could buy a nice pair of scissors or a Matarelli whip finisher that are very useful to me than this plastic contraption.

P.S. This is my feelings on this tool for me. This tool might help others out. I will not knock others if they can use this tool and achieve nice looking flies. I just don’t see the need or use in it for me.
Thanks.
I’m against the tool. But then again, I’m not comfortable using a bobbin, and would never resort to a whip finish tool. I’m also opposed to vises that spin around an axis. Don’t like cell phones either.

I went to the ISE earlier this year and watched Kim Boal demonstrate the Magic Tool. I was impressed at the speed in which she can tie a fly with it. After spending a half hour watching her use various methods with the MT I bought one. After about a week of playing with it I can honestly say that the MT is a lot of fun to tie with and my speed at using it has greatly increased.
Ladyfisher: What I would do without the MT is to lay the CDC upon a piece of styorfoam block in which I had already cut a slit. The I would push the CDC into the alone, or with the aid of thread or an old credit card. Then I would grasp the CDC with a cheap binder clip and remove it from the foam, and proceed. The only advantage of the MT is that is is CLEAR plastic, but a little practice should overcome that advantage.
If anyone is interested. Good price and they are very nice people to do business with.
