Made 2 Fly

Cabelas has the Made2Fly vise on sale for $30. I am looking for my first vise, what are the thoughts on this vise?

I don’t have any personal experience with this vise, but going by the reviews on Cabelas’s it does not rate highly with most.

If you are looking for suggestions on a vise give us your budget. The folks here will gladly help out.

Well, I was encouraged to give you guys some specs and see what you thought you may could work up.
So here are some details.
I currently live about an hour south of Birmingham, AL, but will be relocating to St. Louis this time next year to begin seminary. I grew up in Western NC and loved fishing, but did not begin fly fishing till I moved to Alabama. My current pastor and a few of my youth enjoy fly fishing and tying as well, but my pastor only has one (really bad) vise. Being a young husband/father I have a pretty tight budget, but have been saving for a while to purchase a vise, tools, ect. Recently some of my youth (I am a youth pastor)gave me a nice envelope full of money for my birthday, which gets me to my goal to be able to purchase what I need.
I have approx 200-250 to work with, but not sure all of this will go to this one purchase.
I would like to get a vise that will last and that I can grow with as well. I have looked at the Renzetti Traveler, Danvise, Apex, Made 2 Fly, and some others. Also been looking at a Dr. Slick tool kit, Fly Tying Made Clear and Simple, and other materials I need to get started.
On a secondary note I am working on my own custom tying desk (I have some materials to work with and either get rid of them or make something out of them!). What do you find important in a fly tying desk?
Thanks for all your assistance.

I am so sorry this was way long

If your looking for a first vise;

Try Al Beattys vice, he is a supporter of the board, if you have any questions you can always e-mail him, or go see there site.

For the low price you will have an excellent rotary vice, my fishing buddy has one, and is extremely pleased with it; and that is saying a lot, because he is a grump old f&rt!

Don’t be sorry for the questions you ask, there are no wrong one’s, you will get honest, and direct answser on this site.

If I am not mistaken Made2Fly is not even in business any longer. I checked on my light not long ago that is one of their lights and no one had their stuff any longer. Unless I got this mixed up with another Mfg I would be very careful buying anything sold with their name on it.

If I remember right, talked to one business that was really hostile about even hearing their name, LOL!

Now mind you I am not 100% sure this is the company, but I am pretty sure, like 85% sure.

Just confirmed it and now am 100%.

I’ll “third” and even “fourth” on Al’s vise!
Got my own, used, and it’s still in excellent shape. Really no fly, of any size/pattern I can’t tie on it, or features I need, that it doesn’t have. One of the BEST bangs for your buck in the market of tying vises.

So this is just a Danvise right? I was looking for a vise he had produced.

Yes it’s the Danvise. And I would add my vote as well. Great vise, and a great value.
