Lykos33 Flatwing SBS

Neat variation of a Stayner Ducktail.

hook - Mustad 79580 #6
thread - Danville 6/0 black
rib - medium wire copper
tail/throat - hen dyed yellow
body - tinsel gold
wing - guinea

Part 1

mash barb, start thread one eye width back from eye; tie in rib and wrap back to bend

measure (gap width past bend) some hen fibers; tie in (1 wrap behind/under)/trim, finish at tie-in

tie in tinsel, wrap to bend and back; tie off/trim

counterwrap rib; helicopter end, cover with thread

prep (folded) hackle (barbs to hook point), tie in by tip

Part 2

sweep hackle back while tying

stroke fibers down, wrap back

position wing (tips a bit short of tail’s end); unlike some of the standard Ducktails I’ve tied with mallard flank, the guinea seemed to lay flat and level with little roll so I didn’t have to resort to tying the feather pointing out over the eye then folding it back and locking in place with thread wraps

tie in/trim, build head, whip SHHAN

Scott

Pretty fly, Scott. Do you fish it for trout and or smallmouths?

Scott, that is VERY nicely done. Little streamers do quite well where I stomp and I am a fan.

Like the step for tying the beard. Never thought of doing that.
Thanks

Rick

Excellent fly, excellent SBS. Thank-you ScottP

Bruce,

Haven’t fished it yet, but I’d imagine it could work for either/both.

Scott

Awesome Scott. I’ve done some Stayner Ducktails and will try this. I love your hackle prep, even I can do that!
