love the kool-aid

I just got finished dyeing my second batch of deer hair with kool-aid. Greatest thing since sliced bread. Now not only do I have fl. orange and chartruse deer hair but my fly tying area is gonna smell like lemon lime and orange. what do you guys think?

Kool:cool:

I agree, that is kool.

How long did you soak your deer hair?

I didn’t soak it very long, but the mixture is strong. 1 packet of mix, 3 cups water, 1 cup vinegar is the formula. mix the amount you think you’ll need, put the hair in (WET FIRST!), then heat to near boiling. the dye bath turns cloudy-clear when it’s soaked up all the color.

Very nice colors. Well done.

Very, very nice. Is the dye permanent? Thanks for the formula, it looks GREAT!!!

Shane

from what I have read the color is permanent, but I haven’t gotten to try it yet.

great idea! let us kno if it holds up!

Would you let us use that for the Tying Tips section? If yes, I can handle everything from here as it is. There is this too, http://www.socknitters.com/Tips/anneKAdying.htm

Absolutely! But you might want to include that if the material isn’t already white, and you want bright colors, you should bleach it. I bleached these pieces using 40% hydrogen peroxide from a beauty supply place. just use about a 4:1 mixture of household ammonia and the peroxide, put you material in, and stir. bleaching takes a day or so unless you heat the mixture. I like to bleach mine in a ziplock bag so i can leave it in the garage without having to smell it and stir it without getting all messy (pick up the bag and squish it around). Enjoy!

Chris,

Great posts Thanks!

Kinda makes you wonder what the belly of kids who drink that stuff looks like?

It also reminds me of a little ditty we sang as kids:

(Sung to the tune of that old Kool-Aid commercial)

“Kool-Aid, Kool-Aid, tastes great”

“Gotta go to the bathroom, can’t wait”

Aid…

Thanks for the mix ration I’m gonna have to give in and try this dying stuff out.

Fatman

I am normally against messing around with bleach, ammonia, acid, dye and other things that will get me in trouble with my wife or ruin a perfectly good saddle or cape but those colors look so good, I’m almost tempted to give it a try. 8T

8T…it is really simple…if I can do it

No reason to mess with success…but here’s what I came across …most Kool Aid has citric acid in it therefore you don’t have to use vinegar…I’ve done it both ways and can’t tell a difference.

White rabbit skin works really well…as does Artic fox

BTW …Wal-Mart brand is very very cheap…at least some time ago.

Still wish I could come up with a nice burnt orange.

It’s been a while since I have mixed up Kool Aid (for drinking). I recall there was sweeten and unsweeten. Does it matter which one you use for dyeing?

Tyrone…I just looked at my stash and they are unsweetened and as I recall it was an issue.

BTW there is some good stuff on the internet on this and in some fly fishing magazines…maybe someone has the references handier than I do.

Ducksterman,

Thanks for the info. I have some white ostrich herl I want to dye varying shades of red for use as gills on some of my flies.

You are welcome…found one of my references…

there’s a color chart on that site also.
