Lost in cyberspace...

How do I search the fly archives for a pattern? Do I have to scroll through them all?

Type the name of the pattern in the search box on the hom page and then click enter. i just tried “mini buggers” and got 187 places to look on FAOL

187…is that helpful???

He wants to search the archives for a specific pattern…IMHO it is some thing that is lacking…I’d love to have someone point the way.

I guess 187 would surely be helpful to somebody.

Yeah I did what you say, typed in Pheasant Tail Nymph and got two thousand four hundred and something matches… all forum (and other) topics as far as I could see, and still no pattern.

I just thought there has to be a better system to find patterns, no big deal.

after the first entry of “Pheasant Tail Nymph”, then select, match ALL words. Cuts it down.

I suppose …

The point I’m trying to get to is that we have a wonderful resource here on the archives of FAOL and it is very cumbersome to try to find a pattern…believe me I’ve tried …unless I’m missing something I wish the powers that be would find a way so that we could just search the archives.

Doing that cuts it down to 145 matches, and not one is a PTN.

I went to the home page and typed in “Pheasant Tail Nymph pattern” in the search box below the fly of the week, and this link came up as the first choice. Guess I’m just lucky.

I know it means more work, but an alternative alphabetical list by the pattern names would be helpful. I’ve also been very successful using the search tool to find patterns. I must admit that I use the word “pattern” when looking for a specific pattern.

Joe

Joe…actually it could be luck in that that link is not in the archives…I’m thinking we are talking about fly of the week archives…am I wrong…

I at times have had more luck doing a google…sometimes getting a good FAOL link…

My experience has been that I’m more successful using internal search engines than Google. Google is very broad based where the FAOL search engine looks within its own pages for the key words. If you know it’s somewhere on FAOL, try their search engine first.

I didn’t look in the fly of the week archives. I trust that you did because you said it’s not there. The link I referenced is Lesson 11 from Al Cambell’s beginner series of tying lessons. The Hare’s Ear Nymph is also part of that lesson.

“I trust that you did because you said it’s not there.”

No, I didn’t say it’s not there…in fact, I can’t imagine that pattern isn’t there…it’s just that the searches we have available cover so much that there’s so much to wade through…lucky if it shows up early.

The PTN that comes up is actually a Hares Ear with a pheasant tail wing… and as well as the Hares Ear pattern. All the other matches are for other stuff.

This would be good…

““I know it means more work, but an alternative alphabetical list by the pattern names would be helpful.””

I think I actually found the answer. In search, type in FOTW then the name of the pattern. eg. FOTW Pheasant Tail Nymph. or FOTW Yellow Sally

It worked for me every time and I tried 10 different patterns . You get about 5 choices and the correct one is almost always there.

What did I win???

Try this:

Another option is to use your browser’s “Find” command in the edit pull-down menu. When I’m looking for a specific pattern in FOTW, I go to the FOTW Archive Page, click “edit”, “Find on this Page”, then type all or part of the pattern name. (As much o fit as I can remember, anyway. :?
Then just keep clicking “Find Next” until you get the one you want.
An added tip… Instead of clicking on the link directly, right-click and select “Open in a new window/tab” )depending on your browser.) That way you don’t have to use the back button or lose your place in the list.

Kirk

Kirk…wow that’s great…hope I can remember…THx

GNB…you too

Gringo,

I am not sure if this will be any more help for you or not, but, I have had pretty good success with it:

Go to the main page

Click on Fly Tying

In the Search window type what you are looking for and use “quote” signs and the “plus” sign like this: “Woolly+Bugger” or “Soft+Hackle+Wet+fly”

Putting the quotes at the beginning and the end is suppose to tell the search engine to look for all words between the quotes and the plus sign between words tells it to look for the all the words in the sequence as typed.

Hopefully, this will help.
