7 to 8 ft. 3 or 4 piece.
I have a 6 ft and 8.6 that are too soft and will not do for an upcoming trip.
Low $ is a consideration.

Winston B II X. I know I bring this rod up so often that Winston should pay me for my services, but in my opinion it is miles ahead of the rest of the pack in fast action graphite. This rod is what the Sage XP dreams of becoming.

Thaks Jeremy but 600 bucks for a rod for this purpose is too much $ right now.
Several years ago recall reading about short rods that were designed to shoot line.??
Edit-- Reddington (FAOL Sponsor) seems to have some relevant rodds.

Sorry, I didn’t notice that last part about low $ being a consideration. The Winston is pricey for sure. In my opinion it’s worth it though.

The Redington model that is being offered for the free drawing may be just what you’re looking for. I fished a buddies(6wt.) and found it to be a nice rod. Fast action, seemed to have a strong but section, and I thought it was a nice looking rod too. I was able to toss about 50’ of line with no problem and was confined to this length due to stream size. Check one out, it may be what you’re looking for.

I think that St Croix has a couple of fast. Personally I like the G Loomis Streamdance GLX, but wrong price range. TFO could be good.
A fast 3 or 4 wt? I don’t mean to sound like I know it all (because I surely don’t !!!) …but a fast rod in a low weight seems like a mistake to me. 3wts aren’t meant to cast more than 30 ft, and by asking for a fast wt. you are going to loose feel. You are not going to use a rod that small in a lake, so the fastness you ask for is not necessary. Presentation is 75% of the game, and you are throwing it all away with a fast rod like that.
Maybe someone else can elaborate?

My SageLL 2wt, I consider med/fast and I use it in the Uinta’s for still water. The thing casts great, but I think any rod under 7’ is going to be more difficult to cast long distances. I have one 6’ 3wt. that doesn’t cast well at all, use it more for sling shots in very small brooks.

Thin Air my brother Cav is crazy about his new Sage Launch 8 1/2 ft 3 wt. Fairly fast and under $200.

A shortish 3 wt is not a mistake. My usual rod is a Sage 9 ft 5 wt RPL which is a fasty…I like it.
I already have a 6 ft 3 for super close vegetation-combat fishing – it is too soft for what I want, unless extreme care is used the loops will be too open and get tree-nabbed. I’ve used a faster rod for about 20 years now…
My experience is that a fast rod (properly used) more easily generates tight loops with my natural cast move and will easily and controllably generate the moderate and average long distances when needed if I do my part. Since the casting room will be somewhat snug but not extreme, my judgement is that approx 7.5 ft of fast 3 wt is the way to go.
Edit-- fishing gods Lee and Joan Wulff could put out pretty much the whole line with a salmon fly while waist deep with rods of about 6-7 ft. and that was in the 50’s folks BG (before graphite) and modern rods.

Consider the “Redington Crosswater”, it is available in either 2 piece or 4 piece fly rods. There are different weights and lengths.
When I bought one for my daughter, the 2 piece were $59, the 4 piece was $79. They even have combo sets with rod, reel, case.

Thanks all–
Will try the Reddington 3/4 wt Steve mentioned. At worst it will become a backup/beater/loaner. May even stop by Reddington – only 70-80 minutes away.
