Looking for a Cleveland Area Fishing Report

I friend of mine and I are in discussion over a Steelhead fishing expedition over this weekend. As I understand it we’re staying on the east side of the Cleveland area (sorry folks I can’t pin it down any closer as I don’t know where exactly his cousin lives - yet!).

We are discussing the relative merits of fishing the Erie Tribs in either PA or OH (or both). Anyone out there who can give me some pointers and tips on places to try or consider in “The Island Nation”? We’d be willing to travel as far West as the Rocky or as far East as Conneaut Creek. All reasonable options or opinions will be considered.

We’re both good on the PA tribs so our focus for this trip is OHIO!

We’ll be in the area from sometime mid afternoon Saturday through as late as Tuesday mid day.

I’m off to the Ohio ODNR web page to print maps so let me know what you all think would be good places to check out.

Thanks!

I was told yesterday that they were catching in Conneaut – One 11#er—The Rocky and the Vermillion dont have much water but we are supposed to get rain this weekend—if its heavy look to the east—they clear up faster.

Cant give ya any “first hand” reports. But I just spoke to a couple buddies today that fish the Rocky and Vermillion and they said about the same thing shorthaul just said. Fish or two here and there but water is low and clear and needing a rain (which should come in the next couple days).

The Cleveland metroparks puts out a fishing report http://blogs.clemetparks.com/rocky-river-fishing-report/. I was down to tack a look last Sat. and agree with what has allread been said. hopefully we get a little bit of rain tonight and tommorrow to make this a good weekend.
Good luck to you and have a safe trip.
Erich

I just returned from the Rocky, Low water. We need the rain that is forcast for this week. All will be good for this weekend then.

Thanks to everyone who’s so far given me some info. I’m also hoping for a bit of precip over the next day or two. Not looking for a blow out but a little rain to put some flow in the streams, maybe add a little color and encourage the fish to move in and upstream would be most welcome.

Any other suggestions on possible destinations please don’t hesitate to pass them on. Not asking for you all to give me you “secret spots” just looking for some guidance and tips on places to check out based on your vast experience. My buddy and I have some Steelhead experience under our belts we’re just both lacking in on the ground info for the Cleveland area streams.

Maybe we’ll even run into some of you out there on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday morning?

Again thanks to all who’ve responded so far!

I might be out monday morning early, unless I go hunting on sunday. I have better luck with the smallies in the Rocky and haven’t yet found any sweet spots yet, as I am still new at this game. So far as steelies go, I’ve been limited to long distance catch and release.

To all who provided info: Thanks folks! My buddy and I fished the Chagrin and Rocky on Sunday during the sprinkles and spitting rain. Didn’t do much to the fish (only had one hook up and didn’t make the full 8 second ride on that one).

Went over to the Grand on Monday and fished in the snow storm. We got great lake effect snow for the day, ended up with about 6" of that wonderful pellet snow. But the good news was we caught fish. Wasn’t a knock 'em dead day with a fish on every cast but we had some fish on and managed to land a few. Considering the horrid weather conditions in and around Painesville we considered ourselves lucky to have done as well as we did.

We’re definately better educated on the locations and layouts of the streams and I’m sure we’ll be back up your way again to learn more. No real crowds to speak of but I guess we were the only ones crazy enough to fish in the blizzard!:-?
