I’m looking for a 9/10 silver in color fly reel. I would like to find one in the $100-$175 price range. Anyone know of some brands that are good that would stand up to saltwater use and that are mid arbor. I was looking a Redington and a cortland endurance. Are those any good. I’m trying to keep from spending big bucks$$$$.
Pflueger makes a reel called the Trion. I think they have the size you need and they are well within your range. They are machined and have a drag system that compares with pricey reels. You can find them at Sportsmans Warehouse or at least most large outdoor retailers.
Pretty much you get what you pay for in reels. The two you mentioned are both good products. ![]()
Orvis mid-arbor V is only $129 and saltwater safe.I have heard good feedback on them.Thats what I would look at first for your needs and budget.
I have the Orvis Mid Arbor V and I like it. Its smooth and doesn’t easily fill up with sand.

I really like the pfluger, it has a nice drag, I think it is a little better that the redington, only problem is that it will hold less than 200 yards of backing. I want to go for falso albacore, I understand you should 200 yards of backing for them. I guess I could cut the fly line down some.
jkilroy,
The Pflueger Trion 1990 capacity is listed as a DT10 fly line plus 100 yards of 20# backing. You will get additional backing capacity with a WF9 or WF10 line.
If you need still more backing, you could use Scientific Anglers gel spun backing. The 30# gel spun is thinner than the standard 20# dacron.

I have a Redington GD 9/10 in silver that I’ll let go of.
It’s used but in perfect/as new condition (meaning no marks, scratches, etc.). Was used only a few times, never in salt.
It has backing on it already, not sure how much. How about $75 shipped?
bigfin56, why are you selling it and how much backing is on it?
Bought it as a backup. To be honest, I just didn’t like the silver color. I fish a 10 wt. for king salmon in small/medium size rivers and prefer to be in a little more stealth mode. Probably wouldn’t matter for your purposes though. I was not actively selling it but will likely get a black reel so I wouldn’t mind parting with it.
The backing is about 175 yds, I think, maybe more. Drag seems strong enough for anything you’d do with a 10 wt. Let me know if you’re interested, or make me an offer.

How do you like the quality of the reel?
Take a good look at the Pflueger 1912. I use it on Salt Water with 10 or 11 wt lines. Plenty of backing room with 30# dacron and if you put 20# on it doubt you would ever get “spooled”. Drag has worked flawlessly for me to 20+ lb stripers. Under $100 almost anywhere.
Quality is pretty good. Asian made, Korea I think. Retail was about 130. Obviously, less expensive than American reels due to labor costs.
You can probably find a picture on the web somewhere.
I have a Redington GD 5/6 that I use a lot and it works well. That’s why i picked up the 9/10.
if you want more capacity then the trion pflueger has the president serries now for just a tad more then the trion.
ive got a trion on my 9wt and am very happy with it
