Look at this one...

I didnt know where to post this… but here looked good…

What wt of fly rod would this take???

Wowsa!
That looks like some kinda giant pike…what a HOOT that would be! Top-water after ice-out anyone?
Looks kinda hard to do C&R with the gear shown. Sure would not want to kill it unless I was going to eat it. Are those things good to eat?
…lee s.

Lee, … I suppose it’s a Gar.

now that is some gar. I expect they caught it with a tow truck and a #87/0 wet hackle.

Here’s the angler telling about the one that got AWAY

Wow, that thing looks like it could be a maneater—um person eater. Any details on the location, method of fishing, tippet size, etc. 8T

You had better learn to be a happy camper. You only get one try at this campground and it’s a real short camping season.

Yup, that is an alligator gar. Anybody else find it ironic that that picture was put out by “aim low productions”? Gator gars that big are becoming increasingly rare, and seeing them killed for sport makes me a little sick inside.

I 'spose it’s legal, … but what exactly does one do with a fish like that?? …

I hope it as eaten.

sadly Most bow fishers I know …and they are mostly carp fishers dump their catch in the mountains around here for the bears…Why this is a legal “Sport” I have no clue…It should not be…Sport or legal.
Also Know that Sting Ray’s,Eel,certian species of shark…along with carp are all legal pursuits of this past time…

That is deffinatly an aligator gar. A big one at that. Personally I like the zebco type reels that are attached to their bows.

“Just when I’ve caught a nice trout and feeling very proud of my fly fishing ability, my feet fly out from under me and there I sit, wet, flustered and properly humiliated by the Fly Fishing gods.”
Jimmy Moore, “Taken Down a Notch or Two”

Its an alligator gar, and I believe that one was shot/caught on Sam Rayburn Reservoir in SE Texas. They’re pretty common in the eastern third of Texas, and the rest of the humid parts of the western gulf coast. That one is definitely bigger than normal, but ‘gator gar over 5’ and 100 lbs are pretty common.

As far as what kind of fly gear it would take to land it, its probably near impossible on one that size. Not only do the look sorta like an alligator, they kill their prey the same way- the “death roll”. Whether killing prey or reacting to a hook, a 'gator gar will start rolling violently. A barracuda type leader would be necessary to have a chance to catch one, but if the fish rolls and get all of the leader and part of the flyline wrapped around it, 8" of steel wire doesn’t help much.

On the possibility of eating them, that’s rarely done. (by folks with over 10 teeth, anyway) A gar that size is likely over a hundred years old, and antique meat don’t taste too good. The roe of alligator gar are also quite poisonous to humans, so great care must be taken when cleaning the fish to keep any of the eggs juices from tainting the rest of the meat.

Wow…that’s one heckuva gar! Phew…some photo.

I’m afraid I have to agree 100% with OkieBass though. It makes me a tad sick inside to see the testosterone show on the killing of an animal that old with any eqpt. Especially high power, modern eqpt.

Thumbs down. C&R boy here.

Jeremy.

I’m with Jeremy…

I once heard an avid hunter say he would never shoot an elephant given what they represent in longivity…that’s the way I felt hearing the gar was likely 100 years old…it just doesn’t seem right.

now talk to any kiwi angler about Florida big game fish. No self respecting kiwi would be caught dead being photographed with a 60lb blue marlin,

In the old oxbow lakes of Arkansas, gator gar in the 200 pound range aren’t common, but are still there. I’ve long wanted to catch one on the fly, so far my best was about 35-40 lbs. I’ve even advertised once or twice for a partner to try for one in the 200 pound class, but no one applied. And I’m NOT fool enough to try it by myself.
