Does anyone have this book? If so do you recommend it?
No, and no.
is the author dick talleur? If so it was a decent book, it helped me get started.
I have been using Al Campbell’s articles on FAOL to get started. SO I might need something a little more advanced.
I recommend fly tying books, DVD/VHS by A.K. Best. Check your local library they may have some books and/or video on flytying to check out.
Good luck!

have the one by Dick Talleur (as Alex noted) - one of the ones that got me going.
Take a look at multiple sources if you’re starting tying. You’ll get the notion quickly that there’s differences between everone whop writes about tying.
enjoy,
Thanks everyone for their comments…I will do some library browsing before purchasing some books.
The LL Bean beginner’s book by Whitlock on fly fishing is excellent, but the beginner’s book on fly tying by Dick Talleur is not very good. Try Skip Morris’ book Fly Tying Made Clear and Simple, David Hughes’ Essential Trout Flies, Tom Rosenbauer’s The Orvis Fly-Tying Guide, or Peter Gathercole’s new book Fly Tying For Beginners: How to Tie 50 Failsafe Flies. Even an intermediate tier could learn a thing or two from these books. YMMV.
I agree that Al Campbell’s articles on fly tying are great. That’s what I started with. Since then, I’ve also picked up a variety of books that I use. The LL Bean one is on my shelf - picked it up cheap at a silent auction - but I haven’t used it too much. The first one I picked up was The Art of Fly Tying by John van Vliet, from the Freshwater Angler series. It has lots of good background material and “lessons” in it, as well as a great selection of standard patterns. Basic Techniques for Successful Fly Tying by Fefus and Berryman gets a little deeper into different tying methods, and incorporates the lessons with specific fly patterns. A good book in my opinion. Once you have the basics down, The Fly-Tying Bible by Peter Gathercole is a great one to have. “100 deadly trout and salmon flies in step-by-step photographs.” I also like it because it is spiral bound, and lays flat on the desk when I’m working on one of the patterns in it.
Just my two cents worth. Hope it helps.
