Line unwinders/rewinders?

Okay, I’ve decided to finally change some lines and then put new lines on, with backing. I’ve got spare reels, wood, hardware and an old reel seat from a project rod. Anyone out there done a DYI of this sort? A google search wasn’t very helpful. I figure I can mount the reel seat on a board, I have some dowel glued into it now, but the other side is puzzling me. I have a rod butt with seat I can use, but I can’t visualize how to put it all together. Any thoughts would be great!
Thanks,
Mike

So, I did google “Fly Line Winder” and found some possibles. If someone has a favorite, easy to build, please let me know!
Thanks,
Mike

Melk,

I have one of the large line unwinders that allows you to unwind your lines for storage quickly and easily. Send me a PM if you decide that you don’t want to go through the DIY process. You could mount the spool vertically and unwind directly off of the reel.

To take line off and store it, save the original line spool.

Here’s mine; scrap lumber, added a handle to the line spool. The spool axle is an old cabinet knob on a dowel; there’s a pin that drops through the top of the support and down through the dowel to hold it in place. Not fancy but it works great. The quarter round reel seat has since been replaced with a seat off a broken spinning rod I fished out of a favorite bluegill pond (small photo)…

That’s awesome Prairieschooner!

Some of you may enjoy this thread…I particularly liked the hamster suggestion;)

Prairieschooner has been very great in sending me directions and pics. I need to visit the lumber yard, no appropriate wood pieces here, and get going. There are about 4 junk shops, er, antique places next town over to check for the reel seat.
Thanks Prairieschooner!!!

I think I have an old reel seat that will work for your project. If you can wait till I get home Monday I will check and send you one.
