Line question

Well I was out fishing the other day and too much line slacked and stepped on it. Unfortunately is was on a pretty sharp rock and now it has a tear or avulsion in it. Can I super glue this, tape it, or is it time for new line?

Thanks ahead for the help. This website is great and in hte past 5 months of learning to fly fish I have gained years of experience quickly listening, reading and asking quesitons. Thank you for making fly fishing a true passion, love and legacy in my life I will be proud to pass on to my children.

What’s an avulsion?

I’m not sure how it was done but I inherited a line which has splices in the main body of the line. I got it from a fishing buddy, who got it from his uncle years ago. I’m sure some of the nice folks on these boards might have an Idea of how to do it. Personally I’d ask myself two questions, Was it an expensive line or a cheaper one, and can you afford a new one?

Probably best just buying a new one and cutting up the cut one into different lenght tip sections. I have a few sink tips made from old sinking lines, and a few floating sections I fish on sinking lines.

Even if you have a ruined line hold on to it as it may be useful still.

Make afishing fly out of the old line.

I have had some pretty good success repairing MINOR fly line avulsions with Loon UV Knot Sense.

It works well and couldn’t be easier to work with if you get the little UV light that cures the stuff rather than waiting for a sunny day.

I’ve sucessfully used zap-a-gap. There is a permenant bump on the line but it helps me know when I’ve got about 20 feet of line in the air.

I agree with the Knot Sense, it is flexable. Not all super glue is water proof, but I know Zap-Gap is, but it dries hard. Loon also makes a quick Wader repair that would probably work well also and UV dry.

But on a different note. Your line next to your fly is the most important thing, so I will suggest to get a new line. Tough bullet, but something you gotta think about after a couple of years or so.
