pull it off and stretch it!!!
Allow the line to twirl downstream with no hook, that should remove any twist in the line. Then stretch it to remove any coil

A few years??? Easy, strip off all the line a throw it in the trash and get a new line.
Look at it this way. You can use the whole line as an strike indicator.
If I think there is too much in the way of coils, I will take the coils out by just stretching the line a little bit. I will do this in the field after rigging up my rod at the car. I just put the line around a convenient smooth-surfaced object. I use the sideview mirror of my car. I will walk backwards with the rod&reel on one hand, the end of the line in the other hand, and the line looped around the mirror. When I have walked back about 30 feet or so, I will have about 60 feet of line off the reel. I just pull it a bit with both hands to stretch it a little, then wind it back on the reel and go fishin.
If my line has set a long time I’ve been know to stretch the line out between the railings on my deck on a very warm day and just leave it there for hours [clean it then too]. I’m not sure if it does any better than what Gadabout describes.
