Let's say it again: Wear Sunscreen

Add more vitamin D to your diet if you have to, to make up for the lack of sunlight on your skin, but cover it up somehow. And grease those kids up with sunscreen. Get hats for the whole family. Sun gloves are stylish and fun ;)!

This reminder brought to you by the gal who just had a pre-cancerous lesion removed from her face yesterday.
Doc sez it was due to damage done years ago, probably in my well-spent youth around swimming pools, lakes, rivers and camps. These days I fish with a big hat, long sleeves, sun gloves and sunscreen but the horse is out of the barn on some of this stuff. Now it’s a matter of keeping an eye out for problem spots and seeing the dermatologist promptly upon finding any. And spreading the word.

Terrific reminder. I fish with sleeves cut off of T-shirts…even in cold weather. It is just the convienent comfortable way I dress. I have a friend who has had 4 go-arounds with the skin cancer stuff. He lives 4 hours away so don’t see him much. He doesn’t tell me much…but it seems it was bad stuff. I already have spots all over me. Probably the horse out of the barn for me too…but sometimes it’s never too late. I shall change my ways thanks to you. Hopefully your good karma by posting this will save you.

Thankfully I’ve started to lose my hair, so I have to wear a big hat.

Check your skin, or a good pal’s, for these: http://adam.about.com/encyclopedia/Acti … ose-up.htm

Also, look for moles that are irregularly shaped, more than one color, have grown, and are larger than a pencil eraser. It’s easy to take them off, harder to fight cancer if you wait.

Just gotta do this!

I need a combination sunblock/bug repellent in a small carry tube. Right now I have a small sunblock tube and a small bug repellent bottle. Would be nice if there was one that did double duty.

:?:  :?:
Well it’s about time… What took you so long? 8)

“Would be nice if there was one that did double duty.”

They use to make such an animal, check at wallyworld or other favorite purveyor of stuff that stinks.

Eric

Eric-WD…
Be careful of the double duty stuff.
My fishing partner tried some combination sun block and insect repellant in Belize and his eyes swoll up so bad that he looked like he had the eyes of a fly.

I have been using sun scrren a hat with a bill 360 degreesm, sun scrren shirts and long pants for years now. I had to many folks that I worked with in my younger years that had skin cancer and other that died.

I just wanted to improve my odds.

Good reminder.

Rck

I second all of the above. I had a stage 3 melanoma. My father had passed away 5 years earlier from melanoma. I have had probably close to 75 maybe 100 places removed. Some were A typical, some were normal, but due to my history all taken are biopsied.

Probably happened because of my younger years and severe sunburning. My encologist at Johns Hopkins said sun screen wasn’t enough. I had to wear long sleeve shirts buttoned around the neck, hat etc.

While I can’t live like, that I recommend to all of you, use your sun screen and your common sense especially when it comes to your children.

End of my rant

This stuff keeps changing…but be aware of this…sunscreen blocks the wave lengths that cause basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma [cancer]…it does not block the melanoma causing wave lengths…therefore if you use sunscreen and it allows you to stay out in the sun longer…you are actually increasing your exposure to the wave lengths that cause melanoma…one of the reasons some think the incidence of melanoma has gone up…

Something to think about…

As with so many things in medicines you will find varying opinions.

Sunscreen hat sun glasses long sleeve shirt and sun gloves for the back of your hands. You won’t need any messy stuff on your hands with the gloves. BILL

Bull Frog Moquito Coast. Sunblock and bug juice all in one.

I think Wal-Mart sells it too. Thank you, Betty, for alerting me to this product.

I saw a bit on TV the other day telling of the dangers of applying sunscreen and mosquito repellent to children. Seems that the sunscreen causes four times the absorption of DEET into the system, and nothing stronger than 10% DEET should be used for children wearing sunscreen. Anybody else catch that?

Glad we’re having the discussion folks. I’m enjoying the buzz-off clothing which provides some sunscreen as well as insect protection. I was interested to find that the lighter color clothing, like a white t-shirt for instance, has less ability to block sun than a darker color.

Today I helped electro-survey a local creek and my dark wine colored long sleeved fishing shirt kept me cool and unexposed to the UV’s. I hope to live longer than my parents did, so today’s precautions will make for a healthier happier old age.

FlyAngler…

Again, thanks for the reminder. I’m lazy …maybe like the nice tan I get and not looking quite as pasty/sickly! I think I’m old enough now not to try to impress anybody.

What a wake up call for you!! I appreciate the prompt again. I’ll likley order some of the stuff that has been suggested on JC’s posts since they’ve looked into it more deeply than I have. I’ll listen to the experience. We have a family vacation, a full two weeker coming up right after the 4th. Lots of fishing/swimming/sunshine…yada, yada. I’ll be constantly aware now…dammit!! G

S, …I lost a cousin to melanoma about 5 years back. She had my European skin tones. And a few black moles… that wept…and were left unattended!

Thank you again.

Jeremy.

Dixieangler Definately the Bullfrog! It’s great stuff! The bug repellant and sunblock combined is sweat proof, and lasts 8 hours. No smell, dries instantly, not greasy. Works for ticks, too!!

Nighthawk Thank you!

Jack Haven’t tried it for snakes, yet!

Betty, come to the Tennessee rendition of FAOL Fish-In and we’ll be sure to give you the chance.
