Leopard sharks on the fly

I know guys are catchin’ them (SoCal waters) but I haven’t been able to on the fly, only soaking squid but I enjoy it a whole lot more with my fly fishing setup. I’m going to tie a couple of big red flies but what size of hook you guys recommend to use? On my conventional setup I use a 4/0 circle hook but I’m not sure if my 8wt can toss something that big.
Thanks

When I was out on my brothers boat we chummed up a small mako. I threw a large chartruese over white fly that I’d tied up to look like a bunker buster. I used a 2/0 mustad stainless steel regular J hook on his 12 wt. I had a 9 wt at my disposal, but never tried it.
Are you fishing from a boat or from shore? If you’re fishing from a boat I would try and chum one close and then just sort of lob the fly out to it. If you’re fishing from shore, I have no idea what to tell you. Perhaps someone with more experience than me would have a suggestion.

TT

I do surf fishing only and people do constantly catch them so there most be a way, I’m just lost when it comes to that.

This might help MM, http://www.flyfishthesurf.com/photo_album.html …to get that link i goog’d ‘flies for leopard sharks’. All kinds of hits.

Nice info on that graham Owen page, I already contacted him, we’ll see if I get a response. At least I know what flies and what area to fish. Thanks a lot.
