I’m not big on matching the leader length to the rod length. If I’m fishing a stretch of river with, say, a 7 1/2 foot bamboo rod, and later I switch to a 9 foot graphite rod, why should that affect my leader length? I want a trout leader to do two main functions: to turn over the fly, IF that’s my intent; and, if I put a lot of slack into it, to still keep the fly far enough from the fly line to keep the fish from getting too nervous. How the rod length affects these is a bit beyond me.
