LAST minute gift!

Last Thursday I was asked if I could come up with a gag gift for the new Department Commander for the VFW here in Colorado for Saturday afternoon. Like a complete idiot, I said, “Sure!” Ron is a fly angler. His license plate reads “Flyfshr” The last few years there has been very little fly fishing while he was moving up towards Department Commander.

I went home and quickly turned the oversized head for a gavel from a chunk of Aspen I had. “Now I need something for a handle.” I went downstairs to get into the wood stash and see what I had and spotted this handle. What is the handle fastened to the head with? Rod Bond, of course! All in all, it came out well and Ron spent the rest of the afternoon working on his gavel technique.

Kevin, I don’t see any idiocy there. Just a beautiful, thoughtful and well made gift. I’m sure the new Commander will cherish it for years.

The idiot part came from saying “Yes” to a request at 9pm a day and a half before it needed to be finished with all finishes and glues dry when I had NO freaking idea what I was going to do!

Love it and I only know one other thing you could have done with it and that is to have made the “head” removeable so that he could insert one of those practice casting yarn rods that people use in their homes!

Great gift and job well done…

Very thoughtful Kevin.
I’m sure it will remain a family heirloom.

I gotta say then, you think and work well under pressure. Jim

Is the action on that gavel fast, or slow?
Is it a tip-flex gavel? (As in, “I’m gonna bend the pointy tip on that head of yours.”)
I can’t help but wonder sort sort of lines he’s going to use with it…

Ed

Knowing Ron, any lines he uses will be cheesey ones.

Sounds like he and I get our lines from the same place.
