Lake Superior "SUPERFUND CLEANUP"

I subscribe to the Saint Paul Pioneer Press, and I read the whole newspaper on that daily basis. Sometime I find interesting articles in the most unlikely sections of the newspaper.

Xcel among parties tagged to pay for Superfund cleanup

A Superfund site on Lake Superior’s shore is a step closer to getting cleaned up.

The Environmental Protection Agency has identified the four parties responsible for the cleanup costs, which could reach and estimated $97 million.

The EPA has named Canadian National Railroad, the Soo Line Railroad, Minneapolis-base Xcel Energy and the city of Ashland, Wis, as liable to pay for the cleanup of more than a century’s worth of coal tar and chemical pollution on Ashland’s waterfront.

EPA Project Manager Scott Hansen said there will be 120 days for all sides to hash out who will pay what.

Ashland Mayor Bill Whalen said his city has be bracing for this and will try to keep its share down. Whalen said getting choice waterfront property clean for development will be a boon for the city.

Maybe someone should have said," that the Superfund cleanup will also be a boon for the Environment"! ~Parnelli
