thank you from the bottom of my heart for your column today. i would very much appreciate it if you would stop whatever you are doing at this time and stand up and take a bow to all four corners of the world. next find JC and have him give you a great big hug and a kiss from me because i am too darned far away to do it myself.
just a thought on peta, perhaps a better meaning for their initials would be “PERSONS EMULATING TOTAL ***HOLES”. i hope that will fit into the gentlemanly column. if not edit it as you see fit.
Lets see here LF you have psoted another great statement for the cause.but I think we all must realize that the term PC is actually “politicly correct” but let us analize this first the word Politicly. This implies politics opppppps isn’t that something never discussed or cussed in polite company!!! Correct, this word implies being right with out error. If you add the two together that would imply that a politition is right and we ALL know that that is NOT gonna happen.
Just a little chuckle and food for thought on being PC.I know I’m not PC because A;I am not a politition and B;My wife assures me I am NEVER right.
loved the article ,Dennis
Loved that article. LadyFisher, you are one great American! A friend once told me that the word politics comes from the root words: Poli, meaning many and tics, meaning small blood sucking creatures. I think you all know by now that I am about as far from being p.c. as a person can get. Time to go get some deer steaks out of the freezer.
I have been reading this site for several months, but the commentary about political correctness invoked my desire to join the forum. I could not agree more with you on the discrimination we as outdoor enthusiasts are subjected to in todays America. My choice to spend as much available time as I can on the waters of East Tennessee is just that…MY CHOICE, and I should not be judged, persecuted, or looked at as a slack jaw just because of my interests.
Having said that, I proudly join your membership and wish all of you tight lines and much joy as you pursue the sport/artform we call fly fishing.
enjoyment from this site. Tons of good
stuff archieved away and more coming each
week. Lot’s of knowledeable folks sharing
info as well. Kick back and enjoy. By all
means, stop by the chatroom and visit.
I’ve been looking at your part of the
country a good bit lately. Lots of neat
cabins available for daily and weekly
rentals, right next to decent trout streams.
Sounds like a great place to spend a quiet
week with the wife and maybe drown a few
flies as well. Again, welcome! Warm
regards, Jim
Posted this reply on its own page. Sorry, I’m new.
Bravo to Ladyfisher for her article, “The Joke”. If only there were more like her out there, the world may not be so twisted. I’m an active duty Marine and political correctness is something that I’m forced to deal with. It makes my blood boil when I see and hear about people from PETA and ELF causing more destruction and death to animals than the average hunter or fisherman. These people claim to be so righteous, but in most cases they’re no better than any one of us who visit this website. So to the Ladyfisher, I applaud you. To those whom she referred to in her article, I can only hope that you may someday see the light and realize that hunters and fisherman do a lot in the way of conservation. If we didn’t, we wouldn’t have anywhere to go to do the things that we all love to do.
Welcome aboard. Always glad to have
another fly flinger join the site. Military
more than welcome. A heartfelt thank you
for your support of the site and our country
as well. Many of us here are veterans
and can appreciate the demands of military
life on your fishing time.G I’m not that
far away from Wilminton down here in SC.
I’m nearly on the banks of Lake Moultrie
in the Santee Cooper Lakes chain. If you
get down this way I’d be happy to share a
few gill and red ear holes. Again Welcome
and stop by the chatroom and visit when you
can. Warm regards, Jim
I’ve been reading this BB for awhile now, but some things I read recently led me to post for the first time.
So Here Goes:
First, I want to correct ladyfisher on one thing, the alleged ecoterrorists were apprehended in Arizona, not Colorado. They did however burn down two elks lodge on Vail mt here in Colorado. As you may notice in future posts, I’m always quick to defend the reputation of my state.
Second, I use the word alleged, not because I’m a flaming liberal (in fact, nothing could be further from the truth) but because the accused enjoy the same presumption of innocence we all enjoy when accused of a crime. It is a right, the same as our right to fish or hunt.
Last, I don’t quite understand where the perception of persecution of sportsman in this country is coming from. I have never been confronted by the likes of PETA of the ELF while fishing or hunting. I will say this though, As a recent grad of the wildlife biology program at CSU I have on many occasions run into people with misinformed opinions about fishing, hunting and wildlife in general. Rather than relegate these poor misinformed individuals to the idiot pile, I prefer to enlighten them, not with my own opinions, but rather with facts. For example when I was a lolely freshman in the wildlife program, I remember the attitudes of my fellow classmen towards fishing and hunting especiallty. I even remember a few girls in class who were of the PETA mindset, and were pursuing degrees in wildlife bio to as they put it “to protect innocent animals from hunters” By the third year, those same two were begging to go duck hunting on saturdays. Knowledge is power, and the person who uses knowledge instead of opinion is the one who’ll win that debate every time. So the next time some PETA type starts on a rant about the need to protect fish and wildlife, you ask them what they’ve done to help lately. Then proceed to show them how sportsmans liscense fees and stamps provide money for habitat and conservation . Or better yet offer to take them fishing or hunting.
While I agree with Fullwell’s post, I feel like an example might help explain my disdain for such organizations as PETA. While duck hunting a few years ago, my father and I were SHOT AT by a pair of guys claiming to be members of PETA. No joke, there is still a hole in our aluminum john boat. That experience sort of left a bad taste in my mouth. So when I hear about members of PETA being arrested for killing animals to make a point, it kind of boils my blood. Fullwell has made a great point and I applaud him for it, but while they’re not always reported, there have been instances of hunters and fisherman being “persecuted” by people who don’t agree with the sports.
I disagree with LF and don’t believe she has more than a Fox-slanted view. But there are plenty of people I disagree with, and everyone knows what they say about opinions. My problem isn’t that she said it, it’s that it was brought to the forefront.
Why bring politics to the front page? This is a flyfishing site, right? Sure, politics graces our passion on occasion, but it’s better left in forum pages like this one, not in the front page.
For what it’s worth, I’d be in just as much disagreement if she wrote a commentary perfectly in line with my set of values. It just doesn’t belong on the front page.
I read your posting and felt it was a
heartfelt measured response. In a perfect
world, I would be in complete agreement with
your remarks. However, I do not believe that the experience you had with fellow
students will be repeated if you address
Peta or Alf activists in the field or on
a board such as this. In your school
situation, the people had an opportunity to
know you and your sincerity whereas most any
other situation would be You VS Them, and
they have already made their minds up. You
will in all liklihood not get the chance to
explain your point of view to open minds. I
do not believe your statements about the
good done by fees paid by hunters and
fishermen will be well received by these
folks. Just my opinion, and believe me, I’d
be tickled to be proven wrong.
As to never having experienced a
confrontation by Pita or Elf members or the
like, it does happen all to frequently. It
has been a common enough occurance that a
number of states have enacted laws to enable
authorities to proecute those that
interfere with legal hunters and fishermen.
It’s probably not as widely publicised as
perhaps it should be. A quick Google search
should provide plenty of examples.
That said Fullwells, I heartily welcome you
to FAOL and I much appreciate the gentlemanly manner in which you present your
thoughts. Perhaps for now we can just agree
to disagree. I too will be looking forward
to future postings and will approach them
with an open mind. Warm regards, Jim
Greetings. I’m also posting for the first time due to LF’s well spoken column. Finally pushed into action you might say. Since I live in the People’s Republic of Massachusetts, I spend most of my time avoiding re-education camp for Running Dog Fishermen.
Regarding the PETA acronym, Here is a t-shirt to match Kaboom1’s moniker
Hey thanks alot guys. I appreciate the positive responses. I truly believe that nothing has the effect of taking the enjoyment outta fishing or hunting quite like politics. The sad fact is that in years to come the pasttimes we love will likely become more and more political. I would urge all of you to get involved in issues of wildlife management, and more so in issues of land and habitat management. The task to defend these interests falls time and time again to the sportsmen, so we must not grow complacent.
Once again, thanks for the warm welcome
Although I’ve been a member for some time, I don’t visit very often so I missed the “joke”. HoweverI did read ladyfisher’s post. Well done LF, its time someone put PC in a proper perspective.
As my interest is in antique bamboo rods I spend most of my time on another board, however it looks like I need to spend more time here.
