KS & MO Trout

Has anyone fished the lakes stocked with trout in KC area? Wondering how crazy it will be or if it is even worth the time?

As is usual around KC, after a long winter of NO fishing, the lakes around here get pounded! I wouldn’t want to do anything the first few days the lakes are open, but after that, you can always find places around the lakes that aren’t quite as heavily trod.

There are a few MO parks within short-ish distance from you at Leavenworth that are worthy of a drive (under 4 hours). Bennett Spring, Roaring River, and Montauk are all good fishing. Better after the first few days of the new season.

No trout in it (that I know of!!) but the lake right there on Post makes for some pretty good fishing in a pinch!!

There is a stream in Wichita that is designated as fly fishing only. It still gets hit, but I try to go out a lot when the weather gets cruddy. It is better than not fishing, and is actually fun. It certainly isn’t an automatic thing every time out.

Let 'em get this first weekend out of their system. After that things tend to slow down a little and you can usually get a little elbow room. Henry’s lake in Lawrence, Wyandotte County lake, and Shawnee Mission Park in Johnson County are your closest best bets for trout. The bluegills are starting to stir, as are a few early bass, which means the pond there on the base or any of the local city and state lakes will be worth a shot, too.

Here’s an example of the local stockers in Wichita. I have to admit that this is not the normal fish. Most are 12-14". I caught this one on my 2 weight.
