Korn's Spent Wing Spruce Moth (Carnage variation) SBS

If you’re out west in late summer, the spruce moth emergence can lead to some outstanding dry fly action. Doug Korn’s pattern is a great one; I just added a little foam to help it keep it’s head above water.

hook ? Dai Riki 135 #14
thread - MFC 8/0 sand
core - 10lb mono
body ? 1mm foam tan
hackle - barred cream
wing - hen pheasant

Part 1

put a loop in the end of the mono

mash barb, start thread; tie in mono at point above point

tie in foam strip (1/3 gap width)

hook loop onto the gallows, brush mono with Super Glue, wrap up the core (hook length), brush with more glue and wrap back to base; tie off/trim, trim mono

tie in hackle, wrap, tie off/trim; trim flat on top

Part 2

prep a pair of hen pheasant feathers

tie in a bit long, pull forward to proper length (tips even with rear of body), fold stems back to create head, tie off

half hitch x 2, SHHAN, trim wing stems, trim hackle underneath

Scott

Very nice fly … I like your variation Scott… well done.

Thanks, Doug. Forgot to link your vid

Can’t remember if you’re heading out to MT this summer; if so, hope the runoff doesn’t last too long and the fish start looking up.

Very nice looking caddis

It’s actually meant for the spruce moth (a terrestrial, not aquatic, insect) emergence, but could certainly pass for a caddis.

Not this year Scott… But next year for sure… my wife is retiring - so we may be there for a couple of months…

Soooo many bugs to immi with that tie. Maybe add a couple prominent legs and do a hopper and change the colors for our salmon flies around here. Danged interesting and useful. Thanks Scott and Doug.

Very interesting technique on the body. Can’t say I’ve seen before. Love the head as well.

Thanks. Type “carnage” in the Search box - there are a number of different variations on this method.

That’s Doug’s idea; I really like it, too.

Scott
