I plan to fish the tube fly for atlantic salmon in Gaspe next season and need help to know what knot works best with single hooks to keep them in line with the fly. I tried the tube fly last season on one trip out, had two good rises, and missed two salmon, I believe because the fly hook was fishing at a bad angle to the fly. Any experience out there on tube fly fishing?
Thanks

Im a tube fly user and I think I can help your problem. If you go to google and type in “Nordic Way Tube Flies” under—how to use tube flies-- they will show two ways to fish a tube. One with a hook keeper and one to let the hook swing free. The first holds the hook to the tube by using a smaller plastic or silicone rubber tube at the rear of the fly. The hook fits in the hook keeper and will disengage when the fish strikes. I use hollow Q tips for the fly and the smaller 1/2 in long keeper is hospital feeding tubing that i get thru a nurse. The tippit or leader thru the fly tube, thru the plastic keeper and a standard knot on the hook. You then pull the hook eye into the keeper That will keep your hook fixed to the fly. Get a big one on the hook ,the fly come loose, goes up the line and you have a fight on your hands. BILL
Thanks Bill. Have you used tube flies and do you prefer double, single or trebble hooks.?

Yes I use tubes for pike, bass and this spring I want to go for large trout that we have in our lakes. I intend to troll using a flyrod like I did years ago for landlock salmon in New Hampshire. I have used treble and doubles for toothy fish. I use a 12 in or so plastic coated wire leader. I learned this from Larry Dahlberg --the wire thru the tube, the eye of the hook a loop and haywire twist the wire then heat the plastic with a match or lighter to melt the plastic. Same for a tippet loop. Single hook for smaller flies–one latset magazine has a article on tinny trout flies using clear Larva Lace for the tube. Another fly that you might check out on google is the “Snake Fly” Ian Finylas showed me how to tie this fly using mono from the eye of the hook to a loop for the eye. www.seatroutfishing.net/snakes.htm BILL
check the regs on the Gaspe about those hooks…I think double may still be good, but you might get a fine for trebles.

Thanks Bill. Your advice was good . got some good info from that site.
Brad; check out the Quebec regulations here. trebble hooks are legal from #6 down, as are tubes tied on aluminum or metal tubes.
