What are the best knots for attaching Berkley steelon nylon coated wire tippet to the fly and leader end? It’s fairly easy to knot. It’s the 15lb .021 dia. I want to go for barracuda. I can’t wait.
I use the Berkley Nylon coated 15 lb for pike and musky. I use a haywire twist on the wire then heat the nylon with a cigarette lighter or match to melt and fuse the wrap
Figure 8 knot.
Albright knot to leader, figure 8 knot or non-slip loop knot to fly.

wfitz.,
Have you had had fish cut throught the berkley and how do you like it?
I have found “Tygr” to be much easier to work with and have used it extensively for pike and muskie here in Minnesota. I have also used it for cuda, mackerel, kings and dolphin in Florida. I tie a perfection loop in my mono and on one end of the Tygr wire and connect with a handshake loop to loop connection. A figure 8 knot works great for attaching the fly. You can buy tygr wire in the craft stores (beadwork section), Michaels, Wally world or Joanns Fabrics for $5 for 30’ as opposed to $15 for about 10’ in the flyshops. The Tygr wire is much more flexible than Berkley and comes in 20 or 30 lb test. I like the 49 strand.
Thanks willg8rr,
I thought the berkley was not bad to work with. I’ll give the tygerwire a try.
The Berkley has never let me down – I learned how to use it from Larry Dahlberg. He uses it for all of his fly fishing for big fish. No bulky knots, just wrap and heat the nylon.
Kilroy…what Keith said! It’s all I ever use for muskies here in MN.
With wire I use two knots. For a “closed” knot I use a figure 8. For an open loop I use a jamb knot.
To tie the jamb knot, tie an open overhand knot about 1" to 1-1/2" from the end of the wire. Pass the terminal end through the hook eye and tie a second overhand knot at the very end of the wire. Pass the closed knot through the open knot and pull the first knot closed. This will cause the two overhand knots to jamb tight together, forming an open loop.
Haven’t had any problems with either one of these knots.
Kevin
I connect my steel bite leaders with a haystack twist.
