I’v read alot on here and heard from alot that if folks only had one fly to use anywhere it would be the Klinkhamer so I’v tied up about a dozen in a color combo that I like the looks of, (red foxx body, black floss ribbing, peacock hearl thorax, brown hackle and whitetail deer for the post black thread, but I would like to tye some other color combo’s, so my Q is if ya had only one color combo to use anywhere, what would it be?
It would be a blend with every color I could find in it… Then I tie tones of the same basic color, just light, medium and dark versions…
I have found that the most versatile colour is a medium olive abdomen ribbed with gold wire from a diminutive size18 on a Partridge Extreme to a massive size 12 on a FM living nymph hook that I call the ‘Klunkhammer’ due to it’s propensity to hit the water like a half brick but this does bring them up!
This is my favorite Klinkhamer style fly -
I tie this in size 16 through 20. My preferred color is an abdomen of Hareline Stalcups Mirco Fine Dry Fly Dub BWO Gray Olive (SMF27). The post is dark dun zelon. The hackle is a dark bronze dun color. It has a traditional peacock hurl head.
Love this fly and it’s been a great fish producer.
As stated above, try to mix colours, it’s hard to say what colour works best.
But also try to use several colours for the wingpost.
In Norway I have used klinkies in many conditions, and I find that fiery orange wingposts are very visible for the angler, and the fish do not seem to maind that this is not a natural colour. Same for bright red…
Even a black wingpost is very visible in some conditions.

PURPLE! Seriously…the color works.
I did tie up some in burnt Orange Pheasant Tail. For some reason that is another color that produces well, and I am using the new Gamakatsu C-15 #18 vertical eye. Makes threading them a breeze!
yellow, with a florescent pink post. the post is made of a doubled-over yarn, so there is a little bit of pink under the hook that is hard to cover. the first ones i made were a bit clumsy but they worked the best, so now i leave a little bit of pink showing. oh–size 16 and 18 for sulphur and other yellow hatches.
Yellow is awesome. Also, I read that SILK is very effective on Klinks as well as Softhackles. Silk changes colors.
For me, the thorax stays peacock herl and the wing post is always clear antron so I can see the darn thing on the water. The body varies a lot, a medium olive biot on 14 -20’s for BWOs; a moose mane black/white combo in 18-22 for mosquitos; adams grey in 10-16 for general searching; tan, black and orange dubbed bodies for caddis.
I’d go with a yellow post and either an olive colored body or one made out of hare mask.

Glad you brought this pattern up for discussion. I haven’t done anything with it, yet. But after seeing it tied at the Saturday fly tying demo at our local fly shop this past weekend and reading through your thread today, I’ll be tying some and fishing them soon.
Thanks to you and all who have replied.
John
I’m real anxious to see how the flies turn out. As Tim knows, the klinkhamer was very successful for me last year when he & I fished Mossy Creek outside of Verona, VA.
Tim…Post pics buddy!!! We need to see some of these.
Mike
Kool, thank you all for the input!!! There was other reasons for wanting to know, mainly that I have a limited supply of hooks to tye them right now so I thought I’d ask you guys instead of tying up all the hooks with stuff that don’t work… I think I got enough info to tye 'em up and feel good about the color combo’s to try now… I’m useing orvis 1639 hooks to tye them on and I do like the looks of the hook and it has a larger gap them some I looked at in my research on here and other places. I also used Mikes (Tubers) cross reference book info to help out too.
Mike I don’t have the stuff to take and post pics right now but if i did I would be happy to post them.
Again thank all you guys for your input!!!
Tim
Ok heres what I came up with, my next color combo is gonna be,
Black thread
Med olive rabbit dubbing
Thorax Peacock herl hurl hearl…lol
Dark blue dune hackle
White tail wing post
Thanks all again for the pics and input…
And what hooks do you use besides the Gamakatsu? My 2487’s don’t look exactly right.
I’m using Orvis 1639 Emerger fine 1x short shank #14, but there several others that are used, this was covered not to long ago somewhere in a thread on here, I believe The Partridge BNX15 or something like that was the preferred hook…
Hello herefishy, you can always bend a hook to get the general shape you need for the Klinks.
Cheers,
MontanaMoose
And the last winner of combo color I got from this thread…lol
pheasant tail feather for the body, (cool looking body I might add)
peacock herl thorax
brown hackle
whitetail deer post
black thread
