Kingfish!

Hi guys, had a chance to go out from Whitianga on a Kingfish charter on Saturday, not fly fishing, but what a blast! None of us had ever done a kingi trip before, but we managed 35+ fish for the day. Had a ball with some good banter, a great crew and fantastic fishing.
Here are a few pics.
Me with my fish of the day.

Nick with a good fish

Pauls new friend.

And Q with another.

All the best.

Here is a pic of the Deck hand hard at work, she was about 7 stone wringing wet and you should have seen her hauling those kingis over the side of the boat! Girls realy can do anything!

We only kept one each all other fish released, but we did keep one extra, as it had a close encounter with a Mako shark right by the boat, and the deck girl still did not let go! You do not see a tug of war with a Girl v a Mako very often!
All the best.

Well done Mike! I was wondering how your adventure had gone. Those are some wonderful looking kingies. Yum!

All the best.

  • Jeff

All the best.

Hi Mike. Great report on what looks like a great day. Now I’m going to have to come back. Jim

35+ That is a great outing. You must have been exhausted by the end of the day. Those are some hard fighting fish. Sounds like you’re recovering well though. Smoked kingfish, yum!

What species is this type of kingfish? When I think of kingfish I think of king mackeral, with the razor sharp teeth. This fish is comparable in size though for sure. Looks awesome!

Hey FishOn, they are Yellowtail Kingfish. They are found in NZ, parts of Australia and I believe South Africa. The biggest are found in NZ, I think the all tackle record for them is 101lb!
All the best.
Mike

Hey there Mike, Grubbie told me I would find you here.

That was a great trip with some awsome fish. I will let you get away with that cheap jibe about NZ having bigger fish that Oz. I don’t think I can argue with those pics… Were you jigging for them?

Also top video of Q’s, well done.

I wonder how your back was at the end of the day?

Hey Gringo, great to hear from you. My back was stuffed, but it was well worth it. We were Jigging and also live baiting for them, we used recurve hooks and the fish were all hooked in the corner of the mouth so they obviously work.
Hows things with you? Hope all is well and you can make it back to NZ sometime soon.
All the best.
Mike

Hi Mike, sounds like you use the same gear we do here, but your kingies are way bigger than ours. Our little ones fight like demons so I have no idea how you drag those monsters in.

My wife is telling me to go to NZ again so maybe I better listen. When is a good time for you?

Hi Gringo, any time other than August is good for me, how about September?
All the best.
Mike

OK - talk soon.
