I had the pleasure of running a fly swap for Kids. The tiers ranged in age from 7 to 13. These are great flies, my photo skills don’t do them justice. I thought I would post the picture here instead of under swaps so more people could see them.
I know my 11 y/o son had a ball. He can’t wait to get em back. I was amazed at him. He received ZERO help from me. I told him about the swap (he has seen me in plenty) and he said he wanted in. A few days later I told him that we need to go down to the tying area and get started…he came back 30 minutes later “how’s this look dad?” I told him it looked great and in about 30 more minutes he came back with five more just like em.
Eric, not only did they do great but you did a great thing as well. thanks for what you have done for the kids. It’s things like this that will keep the spark alive.
This swap was so much fun to run that I hope to run it again next year. I had as much fun as the tiers did, and I didn’t have to sweat tying my flies at the last minute.
I agree with all the above, my 8 yr old son loved doing the swap, I just pinched down the barbs, and whip finished them for him, he did the rest. He is also jazzed waiting for them to come back. Eric, great idea, and thanks for hosting. BTW my boy is already asking about the next one also.
I ran it at this time of the year as the kids are inside due to weather and would have time to tie due to winter break. I limited it to six tiers so the kids wouldn’t have too many flies to tie. I would have run two swaps for a total of 12 kids but there wasn’t enough interest. perhaps if I had posted a note here in addition to the swap board I would have found my other six tiers.
I got Hunter’s flies today. He hasn’t seen them yet, but those kids ALL tied nice flies! I was proud as can be of Hunter’s flies, but every parent or grandparent involved should be and I am sure is proud of the flies. Those are ALL great!
