Whoa!!! Am I reading that right? Maybe I will put my glasses on and look again.
You also need to read the fine print because you cannot just buy one. Minimum order is $100.00
I assume they come with a lifetime guarantee and an extra tip.
Steve glasses do not help. I tried and the price looked the same with them on.
Rocky
I hope there is a decimal missing in there!!!
After wandering around that website for a while, it doesn’t appear to a matter of a decimal point as much a matter of ego !!! The math just doesn’t work out, until you see that all flies “are suitable for framing,” and the comment that they are all custom tied and will only be available as Randall can get to them.
Don’t think I’ll be bothering him with an order soon.
Well I placed my order today…tell Randalll I will send the money as I get around to it. Just one more reason I never buy from those guys. I used to go in the shop from time to time, but I really feel like Im at the bank when I go there and if your not there to make a 5 or 6 digit deposit you get treated a bit different. Just my experience, there is a knowledgeable staff and lots to look at…but you get my drift
well guys,
Im never gonna order from a guy who is on that much of an ego trip. My kaufmanns catalog just went into the recycle bin!
Kaufmann’s, must be the reason, that River City Fly Shop also in Tigard, does so well!?
But, then, Randall hasn’t been associated with the fly shop, now, for a few years so maybe things are changing!? (But, I’ll STILL only go to River City!)
Hey! Just checked and his REAL BARGAINS are on his “dry fly page” where they’re only $400.00 a dozen!
chris,
if you actually took the time to check out all of the flies including nymphs, dries, stimulator’s etc you’ll see that ALL of the prices are exaggerated and completely wrong. somebody possibly hacked his online catalog or something. i don’t think your knee jerk reaction to throw away a very good catalog solves anything. i think somebody else’s ego is bigger than his.
chris,
these prices will make you save that catalog

Norm,
Randall’s site is for people that want flies tied by him. Does anyone know if there are any other Famous Fly Tiers that have private sites that sell only their collectible Flies??
Doug (Paul??)
No, sorry Doug, I don’t know of any other sites like Randall’s.
Henry Hoffman, of course, is a fishing partner and dear friend down the street from me, so I have 2 boxes of his flies. Then the rest of the flies I have were given to me, free, when tying at shows. Skip Morris, Dave Hughes, Jacklin, A.K.,Teeny, etc.
I also have a half dozen of Randall’s flies, from wayyyyyyy back when he was first starting out. When he opened his first, shop, in an old house in Tigard he tied all his store’s flies. They’re in “some box, some where” in my tying cave!
I guess, I really don’t have “idols” in this obsession of ours, so sites like Randall’s don’t do anything for me, OR make me want to spend $40.00 per fly to hang on the wall. He’s an excellent tier, I won’t take that from him. But I’m sure, we have just as good, here on the FAOL boards, too!
When it comes to tiers and fly fishermen, both, like this I always think of what Alec Jackson told me one time… "If I was mentioned in a GOLF COURSE club house, everyone in the room would say “ALEC WHO”??
I certainly can’t afford those flies but I don’t see anything wrong with the offer. Kaufmann is a well known, inventive fly tyer and his personally tied flies will be collectors items some day. I’m sure that he’s approached all the time by individuals who want his flies for their collection. I believe that Dave Whitlock also offers personally tied flies for a similar price. This is just another case of voting with your pocketbook. If you want the flies, pay the price; if you don’t want the flies, walk on by. 8T
Agreed Eight Thumbs. There are other famous tiers that sell examples of their flies, tied by them, at a premium. Fishable copies of these flies, including Randall Kaufmans’s, are available from many sources including Kaufmann’s Streamborn
Paul,
QUOTE; He’s an excellent tier, I won’t take that from him. But I’m sure, we have just as good, here on the FAOL boards, too!" End Quote.
I agree with you on the whole spectrum of patterns, BUT the Stone’s reputation and the Stimulator’s are hard to beat. I have looked at many copies of the Stimulator and Kaufmann’s is the best in my opinion. The only Fly pattern I ever buy at Kaufmann’s is the Stimulator.
Just my opinion.
Doug
You’re right, Doug! Except Randall’s hasn’t been at Kauffmann’s for a few years now, so the ones you are buying there, are also copies and not tied by Randall himself. Check out Don’'s ties, of it, over at River City Fly Shop next time!
Paul,
I am aware that Randall doesn’t tie the Shop’s flies, because on Randall’s site, they cost a little more!
Doug
Is is just me or is there a double meaning in the title of this post?
Ed
One thing that might clear this up a bit.
He just MIGHT be offering these flies for sale to enable him to use the website as a ‘business expense’ and thus all costs associated with it as writeoffs. To do that, generally there must be some way of placing an order, no matter how impractical.
This thought arose doe to a conversation I had with a gentleman who was given that exact advice by his CPA when he was building his website.
Just a thought.
