Went to this small little pond this afternoon and caught my first fish on a fly I tied myself.
It was a Bluegill and though it was small it was nice to catch a fish after this long cold weather and better yet I caught in a orange soft hackle I tied myself WOOHOO
Congrats! Ain’t it a great feeling? Now take that fly and retire it someplace special. There is a substantial memory attached to that one.

You’ll never forget the first fish on a fly you tied. Congratulations!

And you thought the fish was hooked ?!
John
and so you should…congrats
scubatim,
That is very good news!!
Doug
Congrates scubatim! Nothing like catching a fish, no matter what size, on your own fly. You should keep that fly, and if you have a photo of the fish, put the fly with the photo.

NICE GOING, Scubatim!
Now, there’s NO turning back, from…“THE DARK SIDE”!!!
and so you kept fishing and lost the fly. Right?
JC kept fishing but still have the fly, maybe I will lose it tomorrow. No I clipped it off and put it away. It will get put on my Fly Fishing Hat, if I had a fly fishing hat. I guess I will just have to go buy one.
Congratulations. I remember the feeling like it was yesterday. Feels real good!
Joe
Scubatim , sorry but if you lead with your chin , they will hit you on your chin.
The hat that sells itself.

Congrats on the first fish on your own fly. I caught my first fish on a dry fly at the last fish-in, got so excited I forgot to retire it and now its too late. So take everyone’s advice and retire that thing by sticking it into your new faol fishing cap.
I remember when a fly I tied first caught a fish. It was a warm spring day perfect for fishing. I was lost in no thought other than today is the day I will catch my first steelhead. I was startled when I heard a voice from behind me ask if I had caught anything yet. I looked around to see if he was alone because I had never seen anyone near this fishing hole; it was a long and tricky walk from parking. I had told him that I just wetted the line. He told me that he was from out of town in for the night, heard of the steelhead fishing on the river and was out for a try.
Polite banter turned to what a steelhead may be taken on. I named a few patterns to which he could try; none of which he had with him. I of course in the spirit of fly fishing men the world over offered to him what I had on my line, just in case they were biting on something else.I offered to him my own homemade, hand tied ?egg and veil? pattern. I showed him how to rig his line gave him a strike indicator then as a good host moved up stream giving him the hole I was fishing, telling him I did not mind at all.
Not thirty seconds later to my utter shock I heard the ZZZZZZZZ of a reel. I looked down to see it was not my reel. It was the visiting sole?s from out of town reel. I looked on with a jealous pride that my fly had fooled a fish into thinking that it was a morsel of food. I fished with new hope now knowing that my flies worked, that I too could catch a steelhead on my home made offering. Then it happened again, ZZZZZZZ, he had caught another, bigger than the first. He waved happily to me. The sound ZZZZZZZ yet again, then excited laughter, this fish was huge. He played it well then after a good fight landed a steelhead worthy of any wall. I walked up to him to get a better look at the fish. I was staring at his fish; he was sheepishly grinning at me unbeknownst to me and again startled me when he spoke breaking my jealous thoughts asking if I wanted my spot back. I of course lied and told him no.
A short time later I asked him if he had the chance to get a fishing license, now wearing my badge around my neck. His mouth opened to speak and nothing came out.
Yeah the first time is the best.
…just kidding I never asked him for a license
Respectfully,
Sean
Great story but I have to ask did you write him a ticket LOL
Well done Scubatim, a real buzz isn’t it, I still remember it well too. It’s a day that you will always remember. I agree - never use that fly again, it’s special. I still have mine complete with the day, month, year, place and time the fish was caught.
