Okay, it’s my turn to pick a pattern for the SotM. My choice is to ty big dries, size 10 or 12 long shank, or bigger. Thinking about Lee Wulff’s flies. If you know any other patterm that’s okay. Because of the high costs it would take to ship to Europe and vv we agreed that Billhouk will meister the swap!
Happy tying,
Sjo
This is totally new ground for me but thats why this is so much fun. I found some #8 up turned eye salmon fly hooks that may work with some spade hackle I have but need some ideas for pattens. Lee Wulffs are the only dry salmon fly patterns that I have any information on. Any ideas guys? Am I even headed in the right direction?
P.S. I think I’m going to need a much bigger swap box!
This will be a new one for me. A definite change from 18 and 22’s .
So I will attempt Davies version of this. It will be interesting to see how many extras I get for my fishing box.

Do Floating Terrestirals count as a ‘Dry Fly’, like foam crickets and hoppers?
If it’s OK, I’ll do a Chernobyl Ant, colors TBA.
Yeah thats a nice fly!
Been doing some reading on this one. As far as large hackled dry flies , like those for salmon , I’ve only found a few like the Wulff , MacIntosh or the Parks. Sjo , is this along the lines that you were thinking or just just large trout flies? I like them both so I think I can do either. Thanks
You could also think of bombers!
Sjo
Sure Gig!

Flies are in the mail.

That looks like a Texas size ant! Very cool Gigmaster.
sjo,
Reading that you are hosting a swap is very interesting.
In a swap that you signed up for, and on the date the flies were due(5/1), you posted the following:
“Dear Allan and co-swappers,
I’m sorry that I cannot deliver on time. I know that I don’t make many friends this way, but I can’t make it in time due to medical problems. Being a longterm diabetic my eyesight went down an so did the use of my fingers in minimotoric movements. Basically I don’t see enough and I’m no longer able to steer my fingers as I want to. Why then subscribing to swaps? I allready reduced the quantity, but still not enough. Again I’m sorry to disapoint you.
Sjo”
That kind of action and explanation does not evoke a lot of confidence. But hey, if people want to participate, good luck.
Yes, I was disappointed and, ‘fool me once, shame on you.’ Sorry (not really) if this post is found offensive by some. It’s just food for thought.
Allan
Hi Allan.
Allow me to introduce myself…I am the Administrator for this swap, which has been going on for several years. Most of the people on this swap have been on it for several years, including sjo. We do things a little differently here for people outside the U.S., to make it easier for them to participate.
Just two questions: 1. Are you in this swap, or do you want to be? If you do, it’s OK. I just need to know so I can add you to the list. And,
- Where did you ever get the idea that it was cool to rag someone on a new thread for something that happened in another swap, and is no one’s business except between you and sjo? If you two have an issue, how about taking it outside?
It’s just food for thought…
No, I am not in this swap. However, I have read a few threads and many posts on this site about the reasons why swaps are in decline. One reason typically cited is exemplified with sjo’s own words which he posted and I quoted. You write, “Where did you ever get the idea that it was cool to rag someone on a new thread for something that happened in another swap, and is no one’s business except between you and sjo?” I did not rag on him. I quoted him. As for you being the “administrator for this swap”, I didn’t know swaps had administrators.
Hey, if the people who come to this site want to have swaps, great. I’d like to see more of them. Depending on the theme(s) I would consider participating. And believe me, if I sign on, I will honor my commitment. I hope there are a lot of other people who also want to see more swaps and I really hope that when anyone signs on for a swap he or she can anticipate the other people who sign on will be just as sincere and responsible as he or she will be.
Oh, and by the way, I’ve entered into a few dozen swaps, as a participant and swapmeister, on this site for over 10 years and I’ve never been late or bowed out of any.
Allan
That’s all well and good. If you got a gripe, fine. Put it in the ‘Sound Off’ topic…not here. Or start your own thread. Either join this swap, or take your gripes elsewhere. Fish or cut bait.
Hi Gigmaster,
Okay, I’ve posted per your suggestion.
Oh, and I’ve probably been in on just as many, if not more, swaps as you have on this site. One as recently as about a month ago.
So you can say that I fish.
Allan
Thank you, sir.
Put me down for a Hopper pattern to be determined when I sit down at the vice!
Anyone in this swap cast a two handed rod? This pile of feathers and furs I have made will really come in handy if sparrows start hatching on the water. I think its back to the drawing board for now.
Attention: Stay tuned for an important announcement…
Branhap would like to rejoin the SOTM. Since no one has mailed flies in, yet, (luckily, my wife forgot to mail them, so they will go out tomorrow) I’d like to tell him he can come in for June, if there are no objections. So everyone now needs to tie 9 flies, repeat 9 flies. I’ll look at the list and see where the best place for him to host might be.
We’re filling back up. This is great!!!
