My problem is, people have given me flies and they even stick the flies on little pieces of paper with the name written below? But after I transfer the flies into my boxes I can’t remember which is which. I’m then reluctant to assign names to them in my stories for fear of being inaccurate.
I’d have done that with Stew Denton’s Marabou Miss flies, too, except I happened to leave his enclosed letter lying next to my computer. Re-reading the letter I was able to determine the correct name of the marabou flies he gave me. Otherwise I wouldn’t have had enough confidence to report it by pattern name.
Once on the water I’m the world’s worst for just reaching into my fly boxes and grabbing something that looks like it might work…without giving a second’s thought to what its name is. That will probably change if I ever take up fly tying.
I think I used the last of your Marabou Miss flies (if that’s what they were) a long time ago. The winter-spring of 2005/2006 when I was fishing almost every week in a submerged brush area that will soon collapse from the weight of all the flies I’ve broken off in there. Most of those flies were lost after hooked fish wrapped me around stickups, the dirty rats.
