This pattern just looked too good not to try. Especially since bluegills sometimes go bonkers over an orange-colored fly/lure!
Credit for design of this fly goes to Joe Cornwall of the FlyFishOhio website.
Anyway…my first two attempts didn’t quite look right to me, but I got pretty close with my 3rd attempt:
Great lookin’ fly - cool ribbing material - what is it?
The ribbing is just an silver oval tinsel I have.
Hi Dave;
Is the thorax rabbit dubbing ? Nice looking fly, maybe candidate for FOTW
Nice indeed!
The thorax (beneath the golden pheasant neck barbule stems, that is) is ostrich herl. For size comparison, its tied on a #10 wet nymph hook.
Speaking of FOTW…what is the feeling towards submitting instructions for SOMEONE ELSE’S fly pattern? Joe recently gave the recipe for the fly on his site, but I don’t recall that he gave a step-by-step tutorial. I suppose I could ask his permission?
Another reason I ask that question is…I had really good success with the Sparrow fly, which I believe was a Jack Gartside pattern. I’d like to see it added to the FAOL FOTW pattern archive, because its a winner! But do I need permission to do that (from his estate at this point)? Or are there ways around it…like if I change something minor and submit the tying instructions, but still give credit where it is due?
Dave,
Having permission is a plus, but just giving credit where credit is due usually works well enough.

A very cool-looking fly. Makes me think of a peasant tail nymph.
Fishin’ squirt,
Michael E.
Giving credit to the originator is all that is required or expected. I’d love to have it on FAOL as well, let’s get 'er done.
Please?
Dave, that’s a good-lookin fly!
Nice lookin fly. Did you split that thorax on purpose or was it something that just happened? Either way I like the look of it.
It just sort of happened. However, given the materials used, I think it will happen more often than not as I tie up more of these. Even in Joe’s pictures, it looks like his tend to split a bit as well. The stems of those golden pheasant neck hackles barbules are pretty skinny! :o)
OK sure, I’ll start working on that this week.
Exactly…the way the thorax/legs are tied in are VERY much like how it would be done on a PT nymph! That thought crossed my mind too as I was tying it, even though I’ve only tied a few PTN’s. Great observation!
Nice fly FishnDave
Looks like a great little fly to me. Worthy of a Fly Of The Week for sure.
I really like it, I’ll look forward to seeing the tutorial. Thanks.
Tim
I contacted Joe Cornwall. He gave me the green light to post the FOTW tying sequence…so I’ll get busy on that.
Ya Done Gud Dave! In all seriousness, nicely done.
Rick
Very nice fly
