Jersey coast flyfishing

I have been surf fishing for more than a few years now.
I think I have made a big mistake, I started taking my 10wt. with me for
my weekly surf walks at Sandy Hook.
I am getting to like this flys in the salt stuff.
Sunday was workin a pod Blues that were chopping peanuts at the false hook and
just couldn’t put down the long stick!!!

Any of you Jersey guys know of a good pattern for the peanuts?
I think I am getting addicted to this!!

Wet

Yesterday, where I was fishing in Rhode Island, there were fish busting on acres of peanuts, every where you looked
I had a Tabory Snake Fly on the dropper, and a no-name synthetic high/low type tie on the point.
Every fish took the high/low fly.
The peanuts have grown into the three inch range and the fish are on them like flies on manure.

The fly:
hook: standard length 1/0
tail: light blue over light pink over white Neer Hair, the length of the shank, sparse
throat: white Neer Hair to the hook point, very sparse
wing: light blue over light pink, Neer Hair, to the back of the hook, very sparse
eyes: small dot of black nail polish over a larger dot of chartreuse fabric paint

I think that if I had the Snake fly at the point and the high/low on the dropper, the blues probably would have taken that one instead
While blues can be selective, most often close enough is good enough for them

Perhaps we’ll run into each other there. The false hook is one of my favorite spots. And now that Labor Day is upon, I think we’ll be able to walk (and fish) from the Pavilion up to the false hook.

The Atlantic Saltwater Flyrodders have a Steve Ferrar Peanut Bunker that looks pretty good – http://www.aswf.org. To get the recipe, you’ll have to look at the web site for the Bay shore Flyrodders – http://www.bayshoresaltwaterflyrodders.com. As for me, I pretty much stick with the regular old clousers and deceivers, with a few surf candies in the mix. So I can’t give you much personal experience. However, I couldn’t resist replying since you’re talking about one of my favorite places.

I was actually at the Hook this past weekend, but I was kayaking off the bay side for fluke.

Maybe we’ll run into each other this fall. I’m expecting to be there a fair amount, and maybe those stripers will come into casting range this year. It was mostly a boat game last fall, but if you had a boat, you had a great year.

Thanks for the patterns!
I will whip some up , will be on the hook this coming Wed. or Thurs.
not sure what day yet.

Wet

On the Hook today. 7am till 4 pm.
BLUES ! ! Fished clousers( white/pink& blue crystal flash) #1/0
white Seaducers#1/0
Had 5 in the morning then they seemed to go deep.
Wife and I had lunch at North Beach on the upper deck
and she went for a shell walk,I grabbed the plug rod with
a 7" white popper. took both rods to a pocket I know of
part way to the False Hook.
Threw the plug a bit and started to get chases, caught two
10lbers.
The fish were back in the wash in the pocket.
All I can say is arms sore!
I think I am hooked on this salt stuff ! !
A couple of other fly guys there today also, only 6 guys plugging.
