A Little Love for a different Hans Pattern

While the CDC and Elk is one of my go-to flies, Hans developed another fly that sometimes is just the thing for picky trout. A couple weeks ago I was fishing the St Joe. About 2 pm I came to a large pool with a few scattered rises. After trying a handful of flies, from large to small, I was about to move on. I decided to try my standby fly for these occasions, Hans CDC Micro Caddis. (http://danica.com/flytier/hweilenmann/cdc_micro_caddis.htm)

With a good drift, light touch and a little luck, I caught 30 fish from this one pool. For those who think CDC flies are too fragile, I caught them all on this one fly. It looks pretty scragly, but who says that is a bad thing. While even right off the vise mine didn’t look as good as Hans’ fly, it looked better than it does now.

Give this fly a try. I only tie it with tan body in size 18. But it works for small caddis, BWO and midges. It is amazing how easy it is to see on quiet water. After landing a fish, I just squeeze it dry on my shirt sleeve, blow on it a few times, false cast it and it is good to go. Here is a picture of that fly after thirty fish that day (and it wasn’t new to begin with)! And here is a picture of the pool. (It is bigger than it looks in the photo)

Hey thanks for sharing such a nice looking fly, and great job catching 30 fish from one pool!!! Do you use mole dubbing like suggested in the link, or do you like something else? I haven’t used mole before, and am wondering how it floats? Again, thats a really nice fly, I sure like the simple ones! Cheers.

Rex,

Thanks for sharing

Cheers,
Hans W

RCream,
I haven’t tried mole. Usually just tan hare dubbing. It starts out around the body. In this fly it was pulled away by cooperative cutts!

Rex,
I also get to fish the Joe regularly and small patterns like these are what often saves the day. As we only have 2 days left in the trout season, I will be replentishing my fly boxes soon and you can bet that these patterns will be there for next year too. Best Regards…

I (and many many trout around these parts) LOVE Hans’ IOBO Humpy. It’s one of the deadliest dries I’ve ever fished.

THANKS Hans for a great site and many great flies!

idabelangler,

Happy to hear you like the IOBO Humpy pattern - it is way more effective than its scraggly appearance would suggest.

One correction, though: the IOBO Humpy is not my pattern, it was originated by Jack Tucker, PA.

Cheers,
Hans W

Rex,
A fine looking fly and a fine looking pool too! Thanks for the insites to both.

Hans has some very intruiging patterns on his site as well as some of the best tiers around. That’s why I’d never make it. It’s one of the few best sites on the planet!

And that’s some good looking water too. A beautiful river.

Jeremy.
