Jean-Guy Cote (UNI Boss) 1949-2006

Six yrs ago, I would buy thread for fly tying. UNI started making single strand floss and I really liked it! So I called UNI co. and wrote to UNI and pestered them, because I wanted EVERY color of single strand floss. The floss didn’t come in a standard package, but that didn’t stop UNI, they bent over backwards for me and special ordered twenty different colors in a plastic case. This is the kind of person Jean-Guy was. He was very professional and UNI makes my favorite thread.
I just received his Memorial Card.

On the card Jean-Guy is a little kid on his tricycle, no shirt, holding binochulars, looking at the bridge and water.
I never met Jean-Guy, so speak up and tell us what he was like, if you got to know him?
Thanks,
Doug

Doug - I never met the man either, but he has heled me tie some very successful flies, and for that I am most grateful to him.

I’ve been contemplating as of late whether I would buy all of the different colored spools of Uni’s 200yd 8/0 tying thread. I undestand there are now some 24 different colors. I think I’ll place my order now.

John

 I just came form the uni web site and all the goody they offer is worth a lookies http://www.uniproducts.com/index.html
Ghost
PS I thinking of makeing a few buys there myself.

John, the UNI 8/0 is available in 23 colours and the 6/0 is available in 24 colours. Unless something has changed since Jean Guy passed away UNI does not sell direct to the public, it must be bought through a retail outlet.

Doug, the UNI-Floss is available in 34 colours now.

Jamie,
Thanks for the update! It’s probable that many yrs ago, that I was such a pain in the butt, that Jean-Guy Cote ran up the surrender flag and gave into my wishes. At the time, single strand floss became my favorite thread, because it was more forgiving to my hyperactive tying style.
UNI also sent me some other things with my shipment, a big decal that is on one of my materials bins.
Description of MY floss spools;
UNI-Floss
15 yds.
600 1X
Amount-20
Thanks,
Doug

FAOL I hope could be considerd as a name to use to order from UNI “wholesale only”? Maybe we need to form a Friends of FAOL LLC? I would go for some. In fact, I’ll wager, if we put together an order, it would be one of their largest (catalog excepted)

Doug when i listed my shop on their dealers page they sent me a bunch of product stickers as well as some Featherwing Salmon Fly stickers. I usually also get press releases from them with even more stickers enclosed. All in all a great company.

Jonezee, as a fly shop owner and very soon to be sponsor of this site i find your comment a bit disconcerting. I am sure that if an attempt of what you suggest was made there would be a full blown revolt among a lot of sponsors of this site and a lot of shops that aren’t sponsors.

As to the theoretical order being one of their largest i would hazard a guess that it would probably have to be at least 10,000 spools before it would even register as being in the medium to large order size category. Heck there are times i approach 1000 spools of UNI-Products in my shop and i am only a small shop and we have to buy from distributors, we can’t even go direct to the manufacturer.

Jonezee,
I think your walking on THIN ice!

Yes, Guy was a true gentleman. The last I saw him we spoke at the big Somerset FF Show in New Jersey. Our talk was mainly of the cancer that had settled deep inside his hip. He told me of the alternative treatment he was about to embark on as conventional radiation could not help him because of where and the way the desease was located.
To look at him you would never have guessed he was ill. We spoke at length of treatments and percentages, and hope and having just gone through the routine myself I could feel rather than outwardly see the emotional state he was so heroically controling. He brought me over some spools of very fine black thread and gave me a UNI pin just as though there were nothing in the world wrong that day. He seemed hopeful that these new treatments would give him a future. We shook hands and I wished him well and to please keep me informed. I did not know it then but it would be the last time I would ever see the man with the contagious smile and easy helpful way. No one ever said that life was fair…I miss him…Bob

I’ve come to realize the reason I received a Memorial Card from UNI, was that sure I was a customer, but NOT a normal customer. 5 or 6 yrs ago, I was so determined to get a selection of UNI Floss, that I became obsessed with the idea.
After visiting the UNI site yesterday, I now know that the 20 pack is a standard package, not ALL the colors.
A while back, Ronn Lucas Sr., Posted that Jean-Guy Cote, was sick. That upset me to hear that.
It was very lucky for me to receive Jean-Guy’s memorial card, because it was delivered to a very old address of mine. Luckily a relative lives there and passed the card on to me.
Jean-Guy could have told me to go fly a kite, but he was a special and generous person.
I have some guilty feelings that he had ME to contend with all those yrs ago.
Along with a lot of other things, I wouldn’t do that again. UNI isn’t a NORMAL company, you can see they have pride in what they do. I think UNI is the backbone of fly tying. They really decreased my frustration when it came to tying flies.
Jean-Guy died July 12, 06 and I hope he had some great fishing trips this year, before he passed away.
