I use some of the suff over there to explain to some of the young’uns the NECESSITY of understanding the fundamentals. We’re doing some computer modelling for forest growth and yeild estimations, and some of these young bucks think they can jump right in and start inverting the matrices.
(our “new” model here in Quebec will be using some really neat linear programming instead of simple growth curves).
Same holds true (again, … IMHO), when it comes to moving through the various stages of fly fishing. I wonder why newcomers always try to cast 90 feet right out of the box.
Take it slow, … enjoy the learning curve. It is amazing how many different cast we use to put a fly from here “a” to there “b” … where “b” is only 30 feet away.
fcch---- What has all that missmash have to do with flyfishing I’m a 19 year retired engineer. Forgot that years ago. Are you trying to impress someone??? BILL
Actually, … more to show that even the most complicated “looking” thing can be “decomposed” down to steps than (imho) any one can learn.
Take the double haul for example. For years and years visitors would want me to teach them how to do it. It was only this past summer that Ladyflyfisher showed me how to teach it (she also showed my why my +30 year old technic was ineffective.
The scary part is, I actually know what that equation means.
Another scary thing is thinking you might be one of those people who comes up with some wonderful model to describe reality, which entails use of an otherwise unheard-of computer program, sans manual, which can be understood if only you spend a year or two studying it, and depends on completely accurate veg data, but people like me end up having to use it in the field, without data or training or the ability to spend more than a tiny fraction of our limited time trying to figure it out. And oh, yes, there will be a test on it, otherwise known as the next court case.
Actually, and unfortunately, you are (almost) ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.
Another scary thing is thinking you might be one of those people who comes up with some wonderful model to describe reality, …
In reality (my day job) … and IMHO, … I believe I’m one of the ones trying to put “the real world” back into the darn calculations. Not to go off on a tangent, … but when the governement here took over the long run sustainable yeild calculations for the public forests, unfortunately, some well meaning, but inexperienced people did the work.
I guess I’m just too old school, … but I still believe that the “on the ground” foresters still have a better perspective. The technologie today has many people thinking that 'puters can solve everything. They seem to forget (again, … IMHO), that usually, one just has to roll up one’s sleeves, get down in the mud, listen to the experienced bull buckers, work hard and grind it out.
Chris,
Your rather complex equation perhaps demonstrates my opinion of the stress put on fly CASTING. It AIN’T that complicated. I go fly FISHING and in order to do that I have to fling the fly about 30 to 40 feet. I think I learned how to do that all by my lonesome on my second time out about 35 years ago.AND if you can do THAT, you have mastered ( well, maybe not “mastered”)fly casting to the extent that will cover probably 95 percent of all situations. If someone appears on this board, I make the assumption they can do at least that WITHOUT any previous instruction. A few casts with the line wrapping around ones ears or fly getting stuck in a branch in a back cast should give MOST of us at least a clue as to how to prevent that from happening. Now the “double haul” is perhaps a bit more complicated. It’s a bit like rubbing your stomach and patting yourself on the top of the head. BUT even that is only needed if you fish in the 5 percent of situations not covered by my previously stated stats. I chuckle when I hear " your elbow has to be… your wrist has to be…" Hey, if whatever you do and however you do it gets the fly out 30-40 feet, you’re doing it RIGHT. This is the humble opinion of a recreational fly fisherman (me) and subject to dissection and ridicule by opposing opinions
The elbow and th wrist thing, … Wow, … I hope you never see me casting (joke, … I’d cherish the opportunity to fish with you).
I have been described as one of the most un-elegant fly casters one will ever see. Those few times that I’ve seen videos of myself, … I was ASTOUNDED (always looks better in our mind’s eye).
Sure learning stuff is fun, however, imho, … it is MORE fun just being on the water.
Actually hearkening back down through the annuls of time and the clanking halls of history, the ‘Majestic’ double-haul is indeed, exactly that. Derived from the royalty. The actual mechanics have been preserved for the minions on film since it’s invention. Written down by those who scrobe afore then.
Be observant of her Majesty’s wafting motion during parade events. Particular attention resting in her elbow and thence the lightly addressed wrist. Firm but not rigid. Composed but not locked. Metronome like as in; “elbow, elbow; wrist; wrist” Rather as in 'Shaken, not stirred." Class abides within us all, look thereupon, for it all goes before pride.
Gosh, and all I want to do is go fishin! I could care less about casting 60’ or 70’ or any of those long feet. I’m just happy if the fly hits the water (somewhere) and the cast stays out of the trees and bushes, which claim more of my flies than any school of fish could ever hope to. But, I really like to watch those “Longfellows.”
JC, I think the beauty pageant wave is “wrist, wrist, elbow, wrist”. Which makes for a really painful casting stroke after about five minutes. Although now that I think about it, that is almost a reach cast…
