… which is just another rubberlegs stonefly nymph.

Like stuck in the jaw …

… of a 30" native and wild steelhead in Northern Idaho this afternoon.

That was actually the second of two steelhead that chowed down on a JARS in the space of about twenty minutes today. The first one was a bit smaller but had somewhat more fight.

Couldn’t really get decent pix of either, but I’m thinking I will remember these two fishies, the only steelhead that I’ve landed, for a long time.

JARS was the FOTW back on 12-31-12. It has served me well over the years - it is the only nymph I need on the freestone creeks and rivers that I fish here in the Northern Rockies.

P.S. Two years ago this May, I hooked up a couple chinook salmon, two weeks apart, on a JARS. Those guys were considerably bigger than today’s steelhead - the smaller one was over 30" and the larger one went about 36". Didn’t land either one of them, both broke off 2X tippet like it was tying thread.

P.P.S. My rig today was a 9’ for 4 wt GLoomis Stream Dance, an Abel TR1 click and pawl reel, a Rio 4 wt Nymph / Indicator line, a homebrew furled flouro leader and Orvis 0X flouro tippet.

Very nice fish John. Glad you’re back. I’ve always enjoyed Your posts and fly patterns!

Good see you back John. Your furled extended body flies caught my imagination and I’ve adopted the idea for a number of patterns including a stone nymph similar to yours.

… but I haven’t had much to contribute since I developed all the flies I need to fish where I do quite some time ago. That would be about a dozen flies, with half of them carrying the load over the course of the year.

Maybe I’ll find a need for some new flies one of these days, in which case I’ll be around here a bit more.

… can be used as a platform for such a wide variety of flies that I have only a few “traditional” flies in my fly box - Griffith’s gnats, Renegades, and some small parachute ( with 90 degree hackling ) patterns.

Good to hear that you are employing the technique and enjoying the results.
