I worked in a fish hatchery after college and it was not uncommon to see lots of different genetic anomolies in the fry. Probably the most common was two headed trout. I tried sorting some of them out to hand raise, but these fish almost never survive more than a couple of days. In fact, I’ve never seen one that survived.

Not to play devil’s advocate, but that doesn’t look like a second mouth to me. It looks like the fleshy area betwen the lower jaw has been pulled down as is often done when cleaning a trout. That looks like the fish’s tongue to me – like this trout was injured and healed this way.

Well, since our hatchery is downstream from the Nuclear power plant here in Nebraska, what do you expect? Oh, that also makes anyone else downstream on the Missouri downstream from it too! 
Okay, it was caught here, but the hatchery is not downstream from the power plant. Hey Copper!! I’m with you on this one, the bottm opening doesn’t look like a mouth to me either. I saw this thread early this morningm, but couldn’t reply as I was running late for work. It looks to me to be an oddly healed wound of some sort also. Now if the fish has two tongues, and two sets of teeth, well then I stand corrected, but to me it looks like a rip, or tear of some sort. Just my two cents

The more I look at the picture, the more I am sure this is ridiculous. No way is that a second mouth. That’s the fish’s tongue. It probably got hooked or someone unhooked it poorly or who knows, but if you look at the true lower jaw, there appears to be no meat between the bones. I mean to say that the “second lower jaw” could be pushed back up. I think this was two guys who don’t know what they’re talking about. I wonder if the expert out there saw the actual fish for real or is basing his statement on what the angler told him.
Funny though, this is making national news. I even saw it on the elevator news monitor in my office building here on Park Ave. in NYC.

The lake that was caught out of is a put and take trout fishery in the late fall and winter. None survive the summer, as the water gets too warm. It was planted this fal after being reared in the hatchery. This is the first time it would have been caught. It is just a deformity from either birth or being raised in a pen all its life.

What you have is a trout with two mouths! Either it is a DNA miscoding, otherwise it is a failed splitting of the egg into two fish embryo’s (such as Siam’s twins). This happens all the time in the animal world, and was the main money maker, for the “Freak Shows” at the Carnival Side Shows. That is how P.T. Barnum made his fortune, with Tom Thumb, and Jumbo.
Yes I am old enough to remember the “Freak Shows” when the circus came to town (under canvas tents) or at the county and state fairs. Barkers would entice you to buy a ticket to see things like the “Monkey Girl”, Rubber Man, Bearded Lady, Live Mermaid, ect.

It may be a second mouth, but I sort of agree with you, it looks like someone started to gut it and then quit.

I have to go with the 2 mouths theory, mainly due to the length of the gill covers, they seen to stretch way too far down to be normal.
