Everyone is talking about or is actually out ice fishing and here I am stuck in Oklahoma with 70 degree air temps with 3 farm ponds on our property, an open trout fishery 20 miles away, and a warmwater river 5 miles away. I WANNA ICE FISH! Oh well I think the smallmouth are biting right now…
One of the most effective ways I’ve found to catch big river swift current sandies is by using my 8wt with a sinking leader and a metal spoon “fly” and trolling it behind the jon boat.
Hey I actually went bait fishing the other day, I even used powerbait and a plastic rod but I am working on a split cane spinning rod just for those occasions. I’m not really a FFing snob but I do try to be a bamboo snob.

I have never ice fished I my life I have never even seen a guy on the Ice, fishing. I have always wanted to try but no where around where I live the ponds never freeze. So I guess I will have to wait and just dream.
thanks,

Dear Ida,
Drive northeast a lot, stop in Canton, Ohio on I77, bend over & be prepared to catch my foot in your butt as I drive by!!..70 degrees!..You have just GOT to get away from that foul weather!
Mike
Hey Mike, I know how you feel. I don’t think that we’ve had hard water since '66. I would like to try my hand at ice fishing, but I doubt that it will happen down here. Crud, Monday hit 75. At least we’ve got some hatches going, but they’re mostly midges. We’re still a month or more away from anything bigger than a 16. Good luck in the future.
