Island Nation of Ohio Mini Fish-In (not FF)

Yesterday I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon walleye fishing on Lake Erie with shorthaul (Mike), his friend Mike, and my friend Tom. Tom and I have had some problems refining the proper techniques for using trolling rigs for walleye in the Central Basin of Lake Erie, and Mike was gracious enough to take us out on his boat and show us his techniques. Here’s Captain Mike taking us out to one of his “secret spots” on Deary Erie:

Of course, no gathering involving the “Dough god” would be complete without a few snacks to maintain your stamina on the open waters of Erie. So Tom and I brought along a sampling of dried Italian salamis, smoked cheddar cheese, marinated fire roasted peppers, Tom’s special Hungarian bacon, three small loaves of the Dough god’s fresh Italian bread (out of the oven just three hours before the trip), and some freshly made scones for snacking on. Nobody went hungry!

The trip was capped off with a beautiful sunset which Lake Erie gives up so often…

and Mike’s talent for trolling is self evident by this limit of 24 “eyes.

Thanks, Mike, for a great time and for great company. The next time we go out I’ll bake more bread so we can make bigger sandwiches. LOL

Joe

SInce we can only post 4 pics, here are shorthaul’s friend Mike (left) and my friend Tom sitting on the “fantail” of shorthaul’s cruiser while we were motoring back to the dock.

Joe

those “eyes” would make some nice fish sammiches! bake some buns joe!

Funny you should mention sammie buns…

the recipe for the bread which doesn’t need kneading? I’m ready for another adventure…

Joe, glad you guys had such a good time. Also glad to see that your report matches the reports from my brothers that the Lake Erie walleye fishery is doing just fine! Refreshing to see a fishery that was in such bad shape making such a good recovery. Thanks for the cool photos and bringing back some great memories.

my god those look good lol!

Joe,

I sure am glad somebodies having fun! Love the spread and great haul on the 'eyes. Wish I could have been there for both. Looks like great fun and a great day, good for you guys!

Great pics and very nice, fishing report, Puppy Toes, thanks!
I’m not at all, surprised that you had a good day, not surprised whatsoever that you brought the FOOD, totally reasonable that all had a fun time, but this part about YOU “having a friend”… there’s only SO MUCH of a “fishing tale” one can be expected to believe, ya’ know!?!

I buy him a little fuel for the boat once in awhile and bring food on the boat, therefore he tolerates my presence. Oh, we’re also both cooking machines, enjoying lots of ethnic cooking that not everyone enjoys. Foods like kidney stew, blood sausage and head cheese. Tom also makes his own wine, brandy and other distilled spirits (for medicinal purposes only).

Sent to you by e-mail.

Looks like a nice trip Joe, thanks for taking us along…

It was a great evening!—my friend Mike and I went to my “secret spot” (These are 2004 year class walleye and the school is said to be 3 x 10 miles in size-No secret there-lol)

We drove the boat while eating all of the salami, bacon, cheese and peppers squeezed between Joe’s italian bread and would occasionaly net a fish that we would happen across while shouting sarcasms to keep the evening mood light.

Hopefully we can get a spawn of this massive year class of walleye, the invasive species introduced from the international ships ballast water have taken a toll on the lake—keep your fingers crossed that it will keep going.

Thanks Joe and Tom for making the evening a memorable one----Next time we are casting!

Aw Heck, my reputation is already shot… I consider Joe V. to be a friend,. There! Said it. Even got past the SPAM recipes.
