We are going to Islamorada in the second week of March and I might do a second visit in early April too. We have a boat. I am considering using an 8 weight as my basic setup. Should I bring my 9,10 and 12 weight with me as well? Any piece of advice from recommended guides to fly patterns are welcome.
Thanks
Terje
From a Flyfisher’s Guide to the Florida Keys by Captain Ben Taylor: Prime Time for seatrout, ladyfish, barracuda, cobia, cero mackeral, tuna sailfish, wahoo, groupers & snappers in March. April adds bonefish, redfish, dolphin & amberjack; while dropping 'cuda, cobia, & mackerals. Other species are available depending on the water temps & the cold fronts which include tarpon, permit, snook ( catch & release only season ) & jack crevalle. Better get a heavy duty rod tube carrier !
I fished Islamorda in March for 3 years. If the weather cooperates there are some huge tarpon coming through the lower matecumbe(sp) bridge very early in the morning. Take a 12wt.
