Is this the Brown drake?

Fishing in the NE Iowa, I got this beauty on my shoulder. I never saw one of this ones before. Its size was around the hook 12. Is this the brown drake?

Thanks,

Martin

I would say it is an ‘Isonychia’… probably I. bicolor.
Nice photo.
Thanks.

maybe a Isonychia but i don’t know. heres a pic of a Isonychia (dun) the body segments and wings are a bit different, maybe just a different color of this species

I really don’t know much about insect identification so i hope this helps

It is a BFMD… big freaking mayfly dark

It’s a male (big eyes) has three tails and visible secondary wings. The front legs are different in colour from the other 4. The wings are distinct (drakes have mottled wings) which are dark on top and clear on the bottom. The picture is excellent. At this time of year it might be a Hendrickson spinner (clear wings).

HA!

i wa thinking it was a hendrickson spinner

Greg, and all the others!
Thanks! for the input… I went to the links that you all posted and I think that the hendrikson is the closest. It was very early in the morning (6:00am) when I took the picture. Now I know what to tie on!
Ps, fishing was great, couple of brooks (11") and few rainbows (12"-13"). All returned to their element but two rainbows that made our lunch.

I try to keep it simple

Alan,
I also try to keep it simple. When I saw this fly, I just went on a bigger ear hair hare…

I’ll go with the bfmd, This is why I just tye a matching pattern for whatever I see on the streams I fish…and don’t even try to find out the species and or put a name on em…I just know I have what I need if I encounter the bugs again…I’m an Elitist like that! 8)

That’s my way of thinkin too. I don’t care what it is, as long as I can catch one to copy.

Must look funny to someone from afar; watching a grown man in funny boots jumping around trying to catch something they can’t see from where they are… :?

I’m thinking of going back to worms so i don’t have to think so much. Ahhhhh, for the simpler times.
