I’ve been using the same one for 30 years.
It’s a good starting point and it won’t break the bank. You can later find out more about what you want in a vise.
Hope this helps.
Take care, Jim
Flytyer317,
I would question this vise. It states true rotary, but no, it is not. It looks more like a Regal copy with 360 rotation. Not a true rotary. Just my opinion.
I heartily agree with what Jim suggested. I’ve used my Thompson A for over 30 years and it’s like the Duracell battery. I also have a Renzetti, a Regal and a few others but the Thompson is my ‘go to’ vise and what I use most.
The seller has an excellent rating so I suspect the vise is as it is described. If you can get that ‘A’ vise with shipping for $40 or less, you got a good deal .
Thanks for the replies,
Jim, I looked at that vise, and I will check up on it more today, if the price is right I may go for it. Tyeflies, if you are wanting to get rid of any of your vices, I might be willing to buy one of those also.
Thanks- David
Looks just like my Crown vise. Definitely not “true rotary”. Good beginner vise, but not one you’de want to keep for long. It will hold smaller hooks, but the jaws are notched which means the small hooks will sit crooked in the vise and easily break off. I’de look for something different as well. That vise should be shipped to your door for $30.00 IMHO
Best to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
Something I seldom remember to do.

If you are looking for rotary, check out the DanVise, which is normally highly regarded as a good value. Or, look at Hook and Hackle. I think they have an inexpensive rotary that some people like.
I see that the vise Jim pointed out sold for less than $40 with shipping. Also, several other Thompson vises sold for good prices. Me thinks you missed a good buy, assuming the vises were as described.
No,I am not selling any of my vises at the moment.
New Crown vise…46 bucks at hook&hackle every single day…www.hookhack.com
“I’ve often wondered why it is that so many anglers spend so much money on,and pay so much attention to.the details on the wrong end of the fly line.If they took as much care in selecting or tying their flies as they did in the selection of the reel and rod,They might be able to gain the real extra edge that makes it possible to fool a fish that has,in fact, seen it all before” A.K.Best
Had one years ago…and NO…I’d not recomend it,I would however recomend anything by Dyna-King or Renzetti…the new Dingo that has been touted here…also sounds like a great vise…and is souposed to be alot cheaper than the afore mentioned King and Ren…wish ya luck…shop around and get a quality tool…and you’ll not have to go through all I have,I now have and will always have my Dyna-King supreme.

Or Check Jann’s Net craft they have a Griffin Odyssey (sp) rotary for around 68 bucks with lifetime warranty. I’ve been using mine for about 3 yrs now and find it to work great. I’m just a happy customer of them and have nothing else to do with them Later Matt aka STONEFLY71
Tis where I got my Dyna-King…If rotoray is your thing,by all means hop on the E-Z…looks like a Haulava deal, and very well built for such a great price…hummm might just have to order one myself…I also have an Odyssey, which is a good vise (again if rotoary is what you seek).
