I bought a new Medalist 1594 Reel and started putting backing on it, and I think that it is put together incorrectly. It is set for left hand retreave, but the frame and line guard are set for right hand retreave.
Did I forget which way you turn the spool to retreave? Or is it posible that it was assembled incorrectly in the shop? Or did I get a real that someone had already had out of the box and messed with?
I don’t see any evidence that it has been taken apart, but then how much evidence would there be?
Moving the posts is no big deal but I would feel awefully dumb if I did and it turned out they were in the right place all along and I had been trying to real the line in the wrong way…
Done did that… So I know which direction the drag is on and which direction is free spool… in other words unless I have forgoten how to real in line and am trying to do it backwards, the real is set for left hand retreave… but that puts the frame at the front, instead of the line guard.
Hi Ed - If you are looking at the spool side of the frame, and if it is left hand retrieve (counter clockwise rotation), the line guard should be on the left side. If it isn’t, just take out the screws and move it to the other side. It is entirely possible that you got a reel made on Monday morning.
I bought myself a new 1494 recently. Took it all apart and then switched everything around to set it up for left hand retrieve without even thinking about it.
Every other Medalist I’d ever gotten was set up for right hand retrieve.
Don’t you know this one was set up for left hand…
Both frame and ratchet.
Had to take it all apart again to put it back the way it was.
RH vs. LH retrieve was always a backwards notion in my mind. Why would a LEFT HAND retrieve reel require you to use your RIGHT hand when mounted on the rod?
I always have to think about this as well and end up tightening down the drag to check on the winding direction. I believe the theory is that we want to hold the rod in our good, coordinated hand (right for most people) and reel which is easier to do with out less coordinated left hand.
The process would be reversed for the left-handed person, they would want to hold the rod with their good left hand and reel with their less coordinated right hand.
Ed, do you think someone could have changed the reel around and then returned it for a refund? 8T
For what it’s worth, I think most reel manufacturers ship their reels these days set up for left hand retrieve. At one time it was the other way around.
Don’t forget the traditional way - for anyone who started Fly Fishing back in the good old days you always cast with the right hand then switch hands to reel with the right hand. I would never think of doing it any other way! My instructor would’ve slapped me upside the head! I still can’t change.
Nowadays I don’t think the manufacturers know what is correct. Some deliver right hand retrieve others left. It’s just up to us to read the instructions and make the necessary corrections.
NOTE: I’m not about to say what is actually right - we don’t need the arguments going here!
