Disco yarn is an eyelash yarn with flash. I have been using it to make leeches and crayfish for bass and bluegills for the last two years. It works great and is easy to work with.
I am now going to have to start hoarding the stuff!!!
Colors that were previously available are nowhere to be found (except on eBay)
And they are being heavily discounted at on-line stores and local stores
I have noticed it disappearing from Micheal’s and Walmart. Haven’t noticed any 99 cent skeins or I’d be scooping them up. A couple of years ago I experimented with Bernat “Fur Out” which was a fantastic yarn for flytying. They actually recalled that yarn as it was deemed flammable. Funny thing is it doesn’t burn worth a darn when it’s in the water attracting fish.
I recently visited a specialty shop selling beads and other goodies. I found some $.99 Chinese knockoffs of the boa yarn that Rick Zieger uses. This cheap stuff is actually superior to the Bernat for flytying purposes.
Skip,
Do you mean a “Fur Out” fly or a cheap boa fly? When I get a chance I’ll post pics of both if I can. I’ll have to tie some more of the cheap boa flies as I had all of them stolen by Northern Pike.

Both would be great and I will be looking forward to seeing them.

Surprised noone has asked…In what way is it superior?

Duckster,
The fibres are softer giving more movement to the fly. When I bought my first couple of Boa Yarn Skeins. I was disappointed in the stiffness of the material compared to the discontinued “Fur Out”. The Fur Out material moved and breathed like marabou fibres Flies made from “Fur Out” look alive even at rest.
The boa yarn flies need to be moved to look alive. This cheaper stuff is more conducive to movement. I tied a number of small jigs with it and lost every single one to toothy fish. I have not seen the same kind of effectiveness with the regular Boa.
Interesting speck…I have a the “Fur Out” too and that was my feeling also when comparing the two…and the “Fur Out” tends to have more of a sheen or glisten to it…
The combination of my “Fur Out” streamers and my Wood River Glide Rider was absolutely deadly in the stillwater trout ponds I fish. When other guys asked what fly I was having so much sucess with I would tell them I was using a Jethro Fly. Remember Jethro on the Beverley Hillbillies…“Fuhrhh out, Granny!”
Good stuff it’s too bad they discontinued it. I originally bought white thinking I could dye it to any colour i wanted. I used up most of the skein in my dying experiments only to discover that being synthetic it is difficult to dye permanently.
In the meantime I found it very effective so I bought other colours. Not realizing it had been taken off the market I searched and searched for another skein of white and to find it in a yellow colour. Of course I was unsucessful in my attempts. It was the desire for a bright yellow yarn that led me to buy the 99 cent Boa yarn. Using a combination of a yellow tail and body of boa and a collar of black disco., I created a super effective jigfly that was bitten off by toothy critters time after time. I am currently experimenting with 50 pound fluoro leaders in an effort to keep some of these jigs and the “toothy critters” on the end of my line.
I did some serious hoarding of “fur out” yarn after it was recalled. Some from eBay, some from A. C. Moore etc. I like it and use it but I need to make room for the disco yarn I’m buying up!!!
This weekend I plan to inventory my stock and divest myself of half of it.
I will post the list of colors and price in the “for sale” section of this bb or feel free to pm me.
Some ‘recalls’ are as dumb as the people who misused the product and caused the recall. Sooner or later if ‘flammability’ is a reason for recalls, they are going to stop the use of feathers. Not many materials go up or smell as fast or as bad as a Whiting saddle
